Im thinking of adding a pre filter bag to the inlet on the filter box, siliconized Rough Country cold air style, as a pre screen before the oem filter. I live on a super dusty CA dirt road. I have an idea how I want to do it, they are only 10-15$ and they are supposed to not limit air flow.

Question for cold air intake folks do you use the pre filter? does it help with fine dust mitigation?

They seem to be useful keeping some dust out of the paper filter on our quads and dirtbikes, though those are the foam style not the bags

Anything that actually filters dust is going to limit airflow, and anything that doesn't limit airflow isn't going to filter dust.

I would just change your filter more often if I were you.

Well, if you removed the OEM Tacoma true cold air intake box that uses the same V8 Tundra air filter, you have an inferior air filter setup, and you probably should use the filter screen.

one of the cyclone pre-cleaners on a snorkel seems ideal for that use case.

not removing the OEM filter box or filter.
on the inlet to the oem box adding a fliter bag. 3d printing an adapter for the inside of the box, bag just lays inside the box just below the oem filter. catches dust on the inside

This is the way it works like a hop damn for combating dust.
