Is it possible to have a prerunner (trd) with front and rear locking axles with a transfer case?

A craigslister is trying to sell me on that and I'm a long distance from looking at the truck myself. It's an '04. Any thoughts?

    No.

Prerunner can have a locking rear axle, but no transfer case or locked front diff.

    Prerunner means 4x2.

Thanks for the reply! That's what I always thought... this guy is claiming you can lock both together and have 4x4 with transfer case. Guess I'm getting taken for a loop

He could have done a conversion. Theres a few folks here who have done them and I've also seen them on CL. Maybe he bought it that way and isnt sure how to explain it. Id just have him take a pic of the interior and look for the j shifter.

What John said above ^^^ Despite adding the components to convert my PreRunner to 4WD, it is still legally registered and insured as a PreRunner. Having accomplished the work myself, I would be suspect about the knowledge and mechanical expertise of the 'person' who did the conversion for him - or if he did it himself.

Then again, maybe he has factory 4wd but has built his truck out to pre run or in the pre runner style...

Is the craiglist add still up for viewing?

Look for a transfer case and on the door jam it should say "a340F" not a340E. That's 4x4. And if he's claiming the front can lock up ask what kind of locker and for the switch.

That's a 4x4 I'm sure, he probably just has the term "prerunner" confused. The ad states that it's a manual transmission, Prerunners did not come with manuals transmissions in the first generation...Prerunners were all autos up until 2004. You could only get a 6 lug Tacoma with a manual trans if you got a 4x4 model.

That, or he converted a Prerunner into a 4x4 and did a trans swap too. But I highly doubt it. It's much more likely he thinks that all lifted Tacomas are Prerunners, a lot of people have the term confused.

Also, he probably has the term "locker" confused...when he says "both axles lock" he's probably just referring to the 4x4 drivetrain, not actual locking differentials front and rear (the rear should have the e-locker though since it's a TRD OR). At least that's my guess.

Yea, that confused me as well... why would he say its a prerunner with a locking differential. Maybe it speaks to the knowledge of the seller? Potential red flag for me.

Thank you for pointing that out about the 1st gen manual though, I had no idea.

Prerunners can have a locking rear differential as well, they were offered with the TRD Offroad package just like the 4x4's were. Only difference being that the Prerunners are 2wd and not 4x4

The dude just sounds like he has his facts/terminology confused, but it could still be a great truck if the records are all clean and it drives well (make sure the frame is rust free).

If you look closely the tailgate doesn't have the prerunner decal either.

Not a bad price either. Ask him go down to 9k. Good luck.

@Obsessed2000 - I think I will, considering he said hes 3rd owner... 9k would hurt a lot less than 10k lol

I figured someone debadged the back decal .. could happen if you want to pass it off as 4x4, but I think what eon_blue said about no prerunner manuals is convincing.

Ask for pics of underneath the truck as well, if you see the transfer case, cv axles and front driveshaft you'll know for sure. Have to make sure it all works though of course, when/if you go to take a look at it. You can test the 4x4 system on pavement if you keep it in a straight line, just to make sure it engages as it should. Don't turn the wheels on dry pavement in 4x4 though no matter what.

But yeah, the fact that it's a manual trans, 6 lug first generation Tacoma is a dead giveaway that it's a 4x4.
