Hi, I'm going to be in the market for a new truck in the near future and I can’t decide on if I should get 4x4 or a per-runner. I would like to get a 1st gen Tacoma. I have only owned 2wd drive trucks.

I would like to know if the per-runner would be able to do the light off-roading that I plan on doing. I would like to be able to take my truck out on the beach to go fishing and maybe Sand dunes once in a while.

Is 4x4 worth the extra money or not.

Get a 4x4, for sure worth the money...

My advice: I bought a PreRunner to save money in 2009. In 2015, I sold it and bought a 4x4.

    Depends on what you need.
I got stuck in snow with my 2wd truck. Swore it wouldn't happen again and bought a 4wd. Haven't got to use it yet lmao.

But it's there if I need it.

If you plan on trying to drive up dunes, a Prerunner is not a good choice. Idk where you are but sand is different all over the US. Florida you can drive on the beach in a car, go to OBX in Hatteras, NC and you need a 4x4 truck, tires aired down and take your time. Spend the few extra thousand and get a 4x4.

The only off roading I would do would be the beach in Florida to go fishing and maybe silver lake sand dunes in Michigan. Other then that I would just use it for a daily driver and to pull my ski boat. The only issue I have with the 4x4 is that it would cost more then my budget depending on how many miles are on it. I would like to be under budget because i have to do a few mods to the truck when I get it to suit my needs. If the per-runner cant do what I need I will get a 4x4 maybe.

If you go with the pre-runner, be sure to get the e-locker, then it will have twice the traction of the non-locked truck. A 4x4 will have 4-times the traction.

Another thought is regarding the transfer-case in a 4x4. The low-range will be real nice to pull your boat from the ramp.

Sounds like you should save a little longer then IMO. You'll regret the PreRunner first trip to the dunes.

If cost is the only factor, then get an older truck. I paid 7K for mine.

A 4x4 is like a pistol; you never think you'll need it until you do. When I had my PreRunner, I constantly got stuck in situations I never imagined I would. I'd spend the extra money and get the 4x4. Ups the resale value, too.

Pre-runner is capable of doing "light offroading" if it has e-locker it will be more capable on offroad situations. I owned a 99' prerunner and I live up in the mountains. If you plan to go to the sand dunes. Good luck cause your going to get stuck. I speak on that from experience. I now own a 99' 4x4 and it's invaluable knowing you can pretty much go anywhere and have a better chance of not getting stuck. In the long run you will not regret the 4x4. On the other hand there is a pretty good chance you will with the 2x4 pre-runner especially the first time you get stuck on something simple that the 4x4 would of romped right through.

Both are Stock - built correct from the start.
I guess I'm different. Back when I got stationed in snow country I swore I'd only ever own a 4x4. Retired and moved back home to Florida. I have driven a 4x4 Tacoma since then, 2003, putting almost 300,000 miles on it. Never used 4x4, just carried it around under the truck. Just sold it for a TRD. We'll have to see if I miss it.

Don't do what i'm doing: I bought a prerunner in October 2015 due to cost and not thinking I'd need 4x4. I also thought I'd be content with an access cab.

After re-accessing my needs and realizing how limited the prerunner is in unplowed snow, I started to look for a DCSB 4x4. I have since found one, and am now i'm trading in my prerunner for a DCSB 4x4 and losing money.

Do it right the first time my friend.

Something about a 2-wheel drive truck is just wrong.
