i have to disagree. up until relatively recently, there were no 4 wheel drive trophy trucks running the baja 1k. For reasons mentioned towards the end of this article on October 25th, 2015

1,200 horse power can certainly compensate. In theory a 4wd truck is going to outperform 2wd in most racing applications, the technology just isn't there yet. Baja racing is an exception because so much of the race is in a straight line but like you mentioned things are shifting, there are always going to be efforts to incorporate 4wd and it's just a matter of time IMO.

You can build a 2wd long travel trophy truck and jump it or you can build a SAS truck and do the exact opposite. Or you can get a 4x4 truck and use it when you need it. If you need 4 wheel drive and only have a prerunner you are screwed. It's all up to what you need when you get down to it. Think carefully! Don't quote me, I ain't said s_i_!

Yes, you're right. Though me and @Clay_916 are not discussing personal preference or utility differences between the 2 either stock or upgraded as you seemingly mentioned. Were discussing the idea in general whether all trucks should be 4wd or 2wd.

Regarding the trophy truck design, I honestly think the trucks depend heavily on the width of their tires more than the engines HP. Mainly because one of their obstacles is the silt beds. I don't think 1200 Hp would be able to pull you out of one of those without wide tires. But I'm almost certain a truck with 200 Hp would be able to get out of that situation so long as it had wider tires.

Also take glamis for example. A lot of people running vehicles through the sand there drop their tire pressure down to what, 8-10psi (?) so their tires have wider contact to the ground without being so low that the bead opens and their tires come off the rim.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
4WD or bust! Guarantee if you get a Prerunner you'll be finding yourself in a situation where you wish you had 4WD before too long. If you plan on never leaving the pavement and you live in an area where it never snows, then 2WD is just fine, but since you are interested in driving in sand, it's a no brainer.

Man, it depends so much on your activity level. If you travel tarred roads 99% of the time, no way. But, if every weekend you think you might want to go off the beaten path, go for it. Not only that, but once you have a 4 wd, your off road activity level increases.

Count me in for wishing I had 4wd too. Even with the elocker, I still have to air down considerably to even do light offroading. Even on a slight incline, she just spins the rear in loose gravel. Too light in the ass. Having 4wd is like 1000x the traction. Ha. Got stuck quite a few times where 4wd would've saved me so easily.

Easy!!!! I have a prerunner and love it, i take it places that i never could imagine a 2wd could go with good driving, the locker, and good off road tires. All that being said buy a 4wd trust me do it DONT settle lol. You will thank me one day.

Exactly. An Audi AWD can make a very poor traction vehicle on anything but plowed roads regardless of how many drive wheels it has. Ground clearance is just as important as the number of drive wheels you have.

My next Tacoma will be a 4wd ... The only place I've been stuck was on the beach in Jacksonville FL

A guy in a gmc 4wd came over and pulled me out ... that hurt

    Get the 4wd
