I kind of like it. If someone wants to beat the piss out of a $40k+ vehicle, then they obviously can afford it. I'm treating my ride like gold until the warranty is up or no more payments.

How do you think you get a poor rating? Beating on the truck will lower it quickly, thus giving Toyota an excuse to refuse warranty repairs.

That’s not the point though. If the vehicle is yours you should be able to do what you want with it without having to worry about big brother looking over your shoulder to make sure they approve of whatever it is you’re doing.

Facts: Pre-smartphone: I used to get all-tin-foil-hat about the dormant (?) OnStar system in our Saab. I almost cut the wires, but I was lazy. Post-smartphone: Whatever, man.

Would I like a right to privacy? Sure. Would I give up having the world in my hand? Nope. There's a balance in there somewhere.

Never because my truck never transmits nor receives information, and you can’t get it manually from the ECU because I don’t go to the dealership, and you can’t steal it from me when I’m sleeping because I sleep next to my OBD port.

This is true. Google tracks more about us via our phones than Toyota ever will.

When I was doing electronic surveillance for a HIDTA we looked at Berla iVe. One report i saw showed their auto data retrieval software and interface kit could get GPS data, phone records from the infotainment system, times when doors were opened, closed, vehicle in gear, driving speeds. One case they caught up with a person who assaulted a woman as it found where his vehicle was and times. These vehicles keep lots of data these days that is not provided to the owners. The Berla iVe system is a forensic tool mostly used by insurance companies and some law enforcement. In many cases you have to download the vehicle module by module as the OBD II connection will not support all the data retrieval. One report they provided for a Ford was 300 pages long.
