Yes. The Entune app is on your phone and connects to the Entune suite on the head unit. So, not using the app should prevent data communication. There is some question whether the data transmits over a Bluetooth only connection. In my mind with BT only, the data could get pushed to your phone but would have nowhere to go other than the phone manufacturer unless Toyota has agreements with them. Generally like you guessed, it is the apps that gather user data.

skynet has already started the takeover....

Seriously though, you can't go anywhere there is society without being recorded. Video cameras everywhere. Cell towers track your phone whether it's on or off. Gps, online tracking, etc. Why worry about how toyota is going to use info against you when you can't escape it? Also curious, how will they "use it against you"?

It’s already been said, some folks worry that they’ll use the data to deny warranty service if you drive aggressively or in any manner they deem not in accordance to manufacturer’s usage approval.

If its something that we just say "Well, that's normal now, oh well," and don't push back, it'll only get worse.

I, for one, am not looking forward to the day when I have to open up an insurance company's app on my phone and have it log me into my truck before it will let me start the truck.

By reading anti-Toyota posts, and pulling data on the posters favorite fast food chain, then re routing spoiled food products to said fast food chain and either getting the poster in question sick with listeria or causing the franchise to get shut down.

What year did EDRs make their appearance in Tacomas?

There are ways to prevent this main issue here, at least on the pre-2020 Tacos. Just don't connect a phone. For GPS, cell tower, or merchant tracking, don't use a smartphone or turn it off and put it in an RFID blocking pouch, and use cash. But then, cash is somewhat tracked these days, there's civil forfeiture, and limits on the amount that you can travel with.

This state is getting all excited about ditching the very low overheard gas tax (<1% to manage) in favor of pay-per-mi. Essentially, permanent tolling. The privacy ramifications are huge if you consider how they will differentiate between out of state travel, use on private lands, and how the hell are out of state visitors managed. There really is no reasonable way to implement this. And while this is no where near deployable, they are also digging into electronic license plates. What in the holy fuck there?

Check your OM for the EDR statement that I posted from mine. I would bet that yours certainly has one.

EDRs have been around a while. They were the main driving force behind proving the UA cases were bogus

Exactly. I believe our 2001 Saab and Volvo had them. There was some discussion that I remember where most all cars had them by 2005? They were sort of quietly deployed since it is just a memory chip and some programming, not some obvious black box.

Agreed. There's things we can definitely do to minimize our own footprint, but you have to really go out of your way. My worry is that technology is outpacing the customer's ability to react with good regulation. Think of all the people who joined facebook when it was still relatively innocent and are now saying "woah..." I'm one of them.

Pay per mile seems dangerous. Electronic license plates don't sound that difficult, really, depending on what you want to do with them. Is there an article about that?

Most of the laws on the books were written when collecting, transmitting, and reviewing mass amounts of data was expensive. Its a totally different world now.

It’s not outpacing, it’s outpaced. We’re already there. I wasn’t kidding before with that hermit pic. That’s pretty much the only way you can avoid it.

Yeah, you're right. I used to hang out with a guy that was basically an IT guy that herded developers for some marketing company. He was of the same opinion. Apparently they had technology that would look at the bluetooth mac address of your phone as you're walking down the street and put up relevant advertising on the nearest screen.
