I recall @tonered may have been looking into it.. don't know the outcome (needed fittings and/or a proper flaring tool IIRC)....

I honestly want to believe that there is some packaging issue in the transmission that will physically not allow a lower ratio to fit. I can't believe that someone would purposely do that to a vehicle.

Never been a problem for me with multiple 400-600hp engines I’ve done this with. Especially when poweshifting into third with slicks, or dumping at 4000rpm to launch and cut 1.4’s 60’... if it isn’t engaging fully with that much hp you’re going to find out prettt fast, and you’ll have a bad day for sure.

If someone is so concerned about the clutch wouldn’t it just be best to take it into the dealership to have it inspected? Maybe it is out of spec, and all the heming and hawing about it on here won’t really answer that question. It’s under warranty, go get it checked out.

Agreed, and we probably don't want to know what the "more evil" option was. I've been doing some reading to try and understand the physical limitations to ratio selections inside a manual transmission. Not because I have to. Hmm. Input shaft, layshaft, output shaft, counter gear.. better have a look at the SM.

I can’t stand driving the MT in these trucks. Reminds me of the 91 S-10 I learned how to drive manual on

About the pedal travel on the s10? Well besides the pedal sitting high like an emergency brake in a 1998 Buick, which feels like your knee is touching your chest when the clutch is engaged. The pedal travel all the way from that position to the floor was pretty bad. Felt like I was kick starting a dirt bike or something. I didn’t k ow any better, because quite honest I didn’t really know what the hell I was doing. Just thought I was cool because I could actually move that son of a bitch around the block.

Alright while the Tacoma isn’t that bad I just don’t like the long travel and the way it grabs. It’s similar to a clutch in a Subaru. I’ve never done well with those. I like my clutch grabbing low and little travel. To me it’s not only more comfortable but easier and smoother to drive. I can see some people liking it that way. Especially older guys who were used to trucks being that way. But I’ve driven a semi before and it was a lot smoother shifting and using the clutch than how it feels in these trucks

I've adapted to most of the quirks of the MT in the Tacoma, except for the shift to second. There seems to be
a second or two delay between when I fully release the pedal and the clutch engaging. Could be the accumulator, but if that were the case I would expect it to happen in every gear.

Ah well... I guess there's a solution out there for all of us...

cant compare a cars clutch operation to a trucks clutch operation, they are different gear ratios and wont be comparable

I just got a new to me 2016 with extremely low miles and I thought that something was wrong with the clutch when I test drove it (coming from a 2000 with the original clutch) and for a short time I felt like a newbie just learning how to drive a stick. :p

Anyway, it didn't take long to get used to it... but later in the week I drove my old one to work to give the battery a little charge time and I was like "holy cow, this clutch is terrible!"... I've been kicking that clutch for 18 years, so it's a little worn methinks. lol

BTW... it's getting a new clutch in the near future.

In regards to the new one... I would imagine in time that the pedal engagement would get a little lower, but I'm new to hydraulic clutches, so I guess we'll see.

Really? Not my experience at all. I jumped into a 2nd Gen test drove it and jumped into this truck, both MT's, and found them both SUPER easy and smooth.

These new manuals are definitely easier to drive than my 95 was. You had to know exactly what you were doing to drive that thing. Throws were long, clutch engaged almost instantly, clutch was kinda heavy.

I just get in mine and shift and drive. I really couldn't tell you where my clutch eangages because it's no big deal to me. I have probably owned 15 MT vehicles, from three speed on the column to the truck I have today. Every single one of those vehicles felt different, yet all were working properly. Some were harder to push, some grabbed near the top, some were mushy, some were crisp. I had a '70 Camaro I retrofitted a Vertigate shifter into. I'm a big guy and it took a bunch of muscle to shift that thing and the clutch was stronger than Lysol.

So yes, the Tacoma? I just get in and row through the gears man. Top or bottom of travel means nothing. Just shift and go faster.
