Did you still undo everything on the door panel ? And just tilt it out of the way ? Doing mine tomorrow

 

I removed the trim panels, not that it was needed, and the two screws. Then I just pulled up the bottom until there was enough room to get up there. It wasn't super hard. Bring a light. You can see the bolts through the grill, so you have one hand on the light and the other on the wrench.

 

Great write up! I was always looking for a cheap way to upgrade my second gen Tacoma,. Good catch on the tweeters, that is a pretty awesome find.

I wish I hadn’t read this! Now, it’s time to replace the rest of the speakers, I guess. When my wife throws a fit when she sees the credit card bill I’m totally blaming you!

 

Did you ever get better answers? I have the same JBL upgraded system but not happy with the sound quality

 

Do you have the upgraded JBL system?

 

He has a Pro, so no JBL.

So, I have a 17 OR with the standard tech package (7" screen) and I was kind of kicking myself for not going up to the JBL package when I bought my truck. So glad I didn't spend money on that.

I am driving a 18 OR loaner while mines in for diff work and it has JBL and I will say the JBL is definitely a big improvement over the setup I had stock. But for my listening tastes the 2 tweeter replacement + 4 door speakers in the OP sound so much fuller with better depth. The JBLs tweeters aren't too bad but that's where all of the clarity comes from, not much other than some muddy mids from the doors and the sub even turned all the way up doesn't give me 1/2 the bass response I get from the Kicker 6x9s in my door.

<$250 = better (for my tastes) sound than the JBL system. all. day. long.

 

The Pros don’t come with JBL? WTF

Appreciate it. I went through the whole thread and did not see anyone with the upgraded JBL package. Everything arrives tomorrow just concerned the tweeters won’t plug and play. We will see. Great thread.

 

Installed everything today. Was super easy for sure take the door panels right off.

Installed the 4 kickers and the Subaru tweets from the first post, sounds a lot better but I can tell the speakers could handle more power, on the fence weather I want to add an amp to it or not at this point.

 

Let them break in for a few weeks then decide on an amp or sub... they do get louder in my experience
