You won't lose much bass response with an amp. Without an amp however, you will lose some because they're 1) Smaller, since they only make the components in 6.5" instead of the factory 6x9 size, and 2) thicker cone heavier magnet and voice coils are harder to move, so the anemic power output of the factory radio can't move these speakers the way they want.

An amp will be able to drive them well though. I still personally don't get enough bass from them alone, but they're 6.5" speakers. Hard to get bass from anything that small.

the 3-ways aren't components, meaning your tweeters are built in to the woofer. Unfortunately, my legs and feet don't have ears so I like my highs to be played at ear level.
The subaru tweeters are the KS line, but then paired with a 3-way, you effectively have 6 tweeters up front. This makes the highs quite a bit louder than I like, and needs some EQ tweaking to sound even half decent. And again, some highs are coming from the floor and some are coming from the dash so it starts to sound spread out and pretty sloppy.

But take all of that with a grain of salt, as I install stereos for a living and my ears are pickier than average.

i gotcha. kind of a bummer that they don't have the 6x9 components.

    Yeah, x2

tons of 6x9 component sets out there that are great!
Alpine Type S and JL C1's to name some of the cheaper sets.

yea i looked at the JL's. how hard is it to install them? Can i keep the kicker tweeters and just use the JL woofers? does it require any rewiring?

Install is the same as all the speaker install threads. You could use the Subaru tweeters if you’re determined to do the easiest install possible. That wouldn’t need anything extra except the generic Toyota 6x9 mounting brackets and wiring adapters.

Could you elaborate a little more as to what foam tape you used? I get a rattle on my fronts on a small proportion of bassy songs. Putting pressure on the door panel.makes it go away so I'm thinking I need to do something like what you did.

I too sometimes think doing the doors wasn't worth the trouble/money. The tweeters on the other hand still amaze me many months later.

A guy at the local shop told me to just cut the wires going to the 3-way tweeters instead of spending money on the components. would that work? I didn't realize there were exposed wires for the tweeters...

I just installed the fronts and tweets and my bass response is lackluster. Any ideas? Should the rears help?

A couple things I have noticed. 1, the speakers do seem to get more bass response as they break in. Give them some time to play and see if you notice any improvement. Also, as others has noted a kicker key amp or an alpine power pack really wakes these speakers up as well. Just ensure your install is tight and consider sound deadening as I am planning some rattle proofing after getting some noise from my passenger front door.

    Hope this helps!

Amp will do a lot for it. also a sub may be needed depending on how much bass you are looking for.

Those speakers have been on sale for quite some time as they are a discontinued model. We have already sold out of them and started receiving the new models at my particular store so I don’t expect the older ones to last much longer.
