Valero is the brand of fuel that at one time agreed to pay for engine rebuilds if you kept every fuel receipt.

I get only 1 mpg more with Shell nitro premium 93 maybe 2 more mpg? Maybe. But I use the shell premium 93 toptier gas for its superior detergency. The minimal extra mpg is just a minor plus. Dannyblues

That's something I was never aware of! Overheating an internal tank fuel pump. Very interesting

I was wondering why I couldn't locate the mechanical fuel pump on the front passenger side of the engine!
I'm very old and could repair a 1957 Chevy v8 in the dark - asleep- with one hand tied behind my back but some of these threads have my brain reeling.

I do appreciate learning so thanks

I initially had the same question of what octane to use in the new 3.5 motor since the compression ratio is 11.8:1
Considering that variable valve timing and ignition timing can adapt to take care of pre ignition or detonation to a certain degree I think the fact that
the motor runs the Atkinson cycle that the actual compression ratio may be lower than advertised because I doubt they are taking the partially open valve
on the compression stroke in to consideration adding total volume and reducing the actual ratio through what's actually pushed back in to the intake before the valve closes. My guess is the 11.8:1 is actually if the intake valve closed like a normal Otto cycle engine before the piston starts its compression stroke.

I was once in the group that it made a difference. Mostly because I bought into their marketing that higher octane 91 Shell gas had additive detergents that keep your engine and combustion chamber clean etc. But each time I gave my truck for service, I took every opportunity i got to chat w. a Toyota mechanic and they all said just regular fuel is all I need.

The most important thing is to use quality gas. If you see the tanker truck at the gas station, do not fill gas there. When they refill the tanks, it can stir up all kinds of gunk at the bottom of the tanks. Speaking of gunk, try not to run your trucks fuel tank too low, or you may suck up whatever is settled to the bottom of your gas tank. I try to just fill up with regular Shell gas, I've never had a problem with doing that.

First response nails it. You do not gain anything from using higher octane fuel than your engine is tuned for. Depending on the brand, you may get some detergents and additives, but you won't get more power.

Recently switched to base grade as I am over 5,000 ft elevation. Pre-detonation has not been a problem yet.

The sought after "benefit" doesn't outweigh the added cost of fuel, it' negligible at best.

A couple of old myths right there.

There is very little gunk at the bottom of gas station tanks, and what does get in is filtered out just before the dispensing hose.

There is also very little gunk getting in your tank in the first place, and the fuel pickup is always at the bottom of the tank so anything in your tank gets sucked up whether the tank is full or empty.

I'll add running the tank low isn't bad on the fuel pump either, it is cooled and lubricated by the gasoline that flows through the pump not that the gas surrounding it. Now run your fuel tank dry and leave the ignition on run and you will burn up a pump fast. Otherwise, no worries.
