Comfortboard is a dense mineral wool "board" that is hydrophobic , you can actually use it up against foundations and backfill against it with no protection and it does not lose any R-value , with prolonged UV exposure the green colour fades a bit and the very top surface (like 1/32") gets kinda dusty , the other 1 31/32" is fine

Chucking down big rain here today

Perfect day to prep all my gable soffit material .

140 pieces at 32" , back beveled at 2 degrees on each end and once through the tablesaw to rip 1/16"+ off the back side of the groove . Taking those steps on the ends and long edge groove make a tight install 47 thousand percent easier

Got front side gable end soffits installed today , finish the back tomorrow

working up the slope from the bottom presents an issue at the projecting false timbers as the rip that fits up against the timber is unable to rotate on to the tongue of the previous board because there is no additional space

this is how I deal with that ~

2 rows back from the beam I put the full boards in place without nails to allow me to measure the size of the ripped piece . I then remove those full boards , rip the piece and install it .

I then rip about 1/8" off the back side of the groove of the upper board and about 1/8" off the tongue of the lower board so that they can "hinge" without binding . With the tongues and grooves of the 3 boards all started , I gently tap it all up until it all seats , if its all good I put a few 18ga face nails in to make it all permanent

If you backfill up against it, it would compress. That doesnt affect the R value?

That mineral wool hardly compresses at all, from what i've seen. I've used mineral wool like that for insulating industrial equipment.

Started milling up my exterior trims today.

I'm using up material I already have so started my day rifling through my assorted stashes to find boards that will work for the lengths and widths I need , collected it all and brought it over to the shop to mill up . Its funny because most of the material I can remember what job it came from , some 14' / 2 1/2" x 8" fascia materials from a job in 2006 , 14' / 2" x 10" trim stock from a building I built in 2004 , and these 18' / 4x6 cedar timbers from a house I built in 2001 .

I need 4 pieces 15' long by 2"x4" for the gable end transition trims that divide the corrugated metal below from the cedar shingles above , the 4x6 fell into the category of "only material I had that was long enough and able to get full 2" thick dimension out of"

I used the 10" Makita circular saw with a rip guide to mill my 2" pieces in a couple passes out of the 4x6

All my exterior trim blanks milled up to rough size , will refine and profile them tomorrow , order my flashings on Monday
