Sorry to hear. Tobie had a good long life, clearly loved by your family. To her she will just feel tired and go to sleep. It'll be hard for you and your family, but she will go pain free and happy.

Glad she at least got to spend more time with her family. I had something similar last February myself. My 5 year old dachshund had a slipped disk and lost use of her hind quarters. definitely afraid I was going to be losing her. Now she hobbles but can take herself in and out to go potty at least. Can't go for the long walks we used to but its really hard to see them in pain and when their personality changes because if it its even harder when you know they are a happy go lucky pup. Makes me tear up a little thinking about it and I want to go home and give her a hug

Good luck Matt. Tomorrow will be one week since we had to put our cat of 15 years down. Reading through this thread brought me to tears about the loss of our old man. It is really incredible how much our pets touch our lives. Prayers to you and your family. Glad you got so much time with her.

God bless you. Feel blessed that you had that extra time. We were blind sided several weeks ago with our boxer and had to make that decision overnight. It will hurt, terribly, but it gets better as weeks pass. Hold your family, and as someone said earlier, be with your puppy at the end. Good luck :(

Sorry for the loss. Dogs are mans best friend. Always happy to see you never hold a grudge and loyal to the end. You gave Tobie a good life. I lost my dog Milo almost 3 years ago. I think of him all the time. 12yrs by my side no matter what. Just so hard to let such a great friend go...

Sorry Matt. We put down my family golden last year. He was also 14. We got him when I was 10. He was a big part of me and my brothers lives. Last year my brother Chris was home from Arizona for the first time in months. My brother Jeff was home from college and I was around cuz I bought a house in my home town. I got a call from my mom aroun 10pm. The Taz(our golden) had gone to the bathroom inside on himself. My mom and brothers had been trying to get him to stand up but he couldnt. He had bad arthritis for months but this time he finally couldnt get up. After a few hours of him trying to get up but unable we decided it was time. We took him to the doctor to be put down. It was like he choose the time cuz it was the first time we were all home im months. The photo below was taken around 1am and it was very emotional. Now I have a 1.5 year old huskylab mix and he often reminds me of taz...

Very sorry to hear this news OP. I've had to do this to 2 of my dogs so far, and it is the hardest thing to do. Just remember all the good things Tobie brought to your life , and you brought to his. He'll be in a better place.
    Prayers sent. Take care.

My family has always been dog owners. It is never easy letting one of them go, and when they do go, a part of you leaves with them.I work in a veterinary clinic and I see dogs that are slowly withering away and their owners can't make the decision, and when they finally do the dog has been in pain and on pain meds for months. I couldn't see my dogs going through such pain, helps me make the decision when the time comes. I wish you the best, during these hard times, it is never easy losing your best friend.

Sorry to hear this. I've been through this twice in the last year with our dogs and it sucks. However, it is the right thing to do when their quality of life has diminished. Prayers for you and your family.

Thank you, all of you so much for the kind words and prayers.

Tobie was put down this morning, after a nice slow ride in the Taco, playing some Bob Marley with the windows all down. She loved it, every mile to the vet.

We got her a cart to load the bedding onto, and as we get halfway out of the parking lot, she jumped off and walked herself inside. That part was tough for us, but it almost felt like she was not going out on her cart...she was going to walk on her own. She did, the process was very easy and peaceful. We had time with her, and plenty of tissues.

I think that kind of closure really helped. I haven't been emotional about it yet today since we left the vet, but I'm sure it'll come and go. I'm just really glad she's no longer struggling or in pain.

One I found today in my old photos. Makes me tear up a bit.

Here's a couple photos from outside the vets office today.

Sorry about your loss. My puppy is now 6 years old and acts like she's 6 months old. They become part of the family and it's scary how fast time goes by - especially for them.

My wife is in really bad shape health-wise with Lyme Disease... she's been essentially bed ridden for the past year and a half. I don't know how she would have gotten this far without having Kona to hop up on the couch or bed and sleep with her head on my wife's lap when she's not doing well.

You did all you could to make the best of your dog's life so have a few beers and enjoy the fond memories.
