New to the Toyota word. My project 2005 PreRunner just installed 5100 in the front and 5160 in the rear. Tires are 33 but thinking of going 35.

Finally got to converting it to 4WD last month :D

Don't have any public land or trails around me so this is the closest off-roading we're going to get.

Total cost is around $3,000 - would've been $2,000 but I ran into an issue where my torque converter was warped and kept eating through flexplate so I gave up and had a shop diagnose and fix it. I would've never figured out to measure the runout of the torque converter with a micrometer.

Tires and weight really will make or break you with a 2wd truck in snow. That back axle doesn't have anywhere near as much steel over it as a 2wd van or suv would, so you have to make up for it by having some ballast back there. Between the cap and the tube sand I have a couple hundred pounds over the axle, and I run winter tires. It's mildly entertaining being able to just get in and drive normally while half the 4x4s around here slip and slide around and plow through corners on bald all-seasons. I'm sure it'd be hard to justify winter tires in Fresno, but I'm sure some newer all-terrains and a couple sandbags would get the job done.

Yeah I live just north of fresno right near Yosemite so I do get some snow but not nearly enough to justify winter tires, but when I do get new tires snow performance will definitely be a factor, and im gonna pick up a few sand bags to throw in the back for the extra weight. Thanks for the reply!

No doubt. I actually just ditched my snows for the season for some BFG KO2s, and sure enough we got another snowstorm today. That said, for all-terrains the old school BFGs feel rock solid in light snow. Full tank of gas helps, too.
