The electronic LSD uses the ABS sensors to detect wheel slip. When it senses slip in one wheel it will apply the brake to that wheel and transfer power to the other side (open diff). Works pretty good. Sometimes I just turn it completely off by holding down the TC button for 5 seconds

Not sure exactly how it works. I do know its great for traction though. My moms fj cruiser is AWD, and you can always put the power down, its awesome, even when its wet

I would argue yes if you have the ability to lock the center diff

Cause when I was in high school my 83 cheby blazer had locking hubs and if you wanted 4wd you had to get out and physically lock the front wheels

There are different types of LSD. Our Tacos use an electronic system using the ABS and braking system. It works by taking advantage of the tendencies of an open diff.

Other LSD systems use a viscous coupling. That's a fluid that almost instantly thickens during slip allowing the wheels, either side to side or front to back, to essentially lock together. That can happen at either axle, though usually just the rear or front to back if the center diff is a LSD.

Most full time AWD use some sort of electronic or viscous coupling center diff and some also have the same setup in the rear diff

And drive on pavement. Not possible with 4WD because there is no center diff to "differentiate", hence the term, between the wheel speed of the front and rear axles. You will experience "binding" in 4WD on a high traction surface if you turn

The hubs are always locked. It's decoupled within the front diff.

That's why Suburu and lancer have that wheel speed controler that controls speed between front and rear wheels

In the FJ, it has a twin stick that you use to lock the center diff. You drive normally in High unlocked. Then you can select High or low with the center diff locked, which forces the front and rear power split to be 50/50

With the center diff unlocked, its a 40/60 power split front/rear

In some ways the 6-speed AWD FJs had the perfect system. It was a permanently engaged system that allowed normal driving on all surfaces. All 3 diffs acted like regular open diffs under most circumstances. But when slip was detected it could begin to lock up the rear and center diffs. Plus you could actually lock the rear and center diffs to perform just like a 4WD vehicle in low traction situations.

The AWD FJs were only available with the 6-speed manual. Autos had the regular part time system...much like the Tacos

Couldn't agree more! The FJ's were done right from the factory. Made in Japan, and the difference in quality shows imo.. Just a much better design

Yep. On a high traction surface the rear wheels will fight each other in a turn. The outside wheel has further to travel than the inside wheel in the same time frame....so it spins faster. The lockers purpose in life is to prevent that.

I don't think being made in Japan had anything to do with it. I think it was the design and nature of the vehicle
