The term PreRunner was used to describe a truck used to run the desert race course prior to the actual race. The truck was used to look at the track at a slower speed and see where obstacles were located, thus the term PreRunner. The PreRunner was developed in conjunction with Toyota Motorsport's successful desert racing truck program. Much of the suspension tuning and development work was done with the assistance of Toyota-driver Ivan "The Ironman" Stewart. The PreRunner is basically a Toyota Tacoma made to look like a 4WD when in reality it is a 2WD.

Xrunners are pretty sweet! I think its great that Toyota offerst trucks for dam near every need/want. From the 5 lug reg cab, to the Performance based Xrunners, to the long bed 4x4's, and everything in between.

It shouldnt matter what kind of Tacoma you are driving whether it be a PreRunner, 5 Lug, 4x4, X-Runner as long as there are people buying a Tacoma and supporting the truck that is all that matters.

    My little prerunner story-

Took my stock height prerunner sport to Superstition on stock street tires. Aired down to 20 and I was keeping up with the whole team of SoCal Tacos- no problem. Gunned it up and took it easy down dunes. Only got stuck once and that's simply because I stopped right as I was breaking over a dune- my honest mistake. Only other time I ran into problems was going up a steep hill. My skinny street tires were slipping like a mofo but the other Prerunners with nice off-road tires went up without a problem. Ended up asking to get dragged up but I bet if I went off the trail into the brush a bit, I could have made it. No other trouble experienced at all that weekend in my stock Taco. I've pushed that thing into shit where it shouldn't be and still made it out. Prerunners are definitely more than capable of simply crawling the streets. Off-raod beasts is what they are!
