I would never consider a 2wd and haven't for any of the three trucks i have owned. Where i live, cold air crossing the warm lakes in the winter can dump as much as 3-4 inches an hour. This can happen for hours at a time, and sometimes it just pivots back and forth from north to south. Just finish cleaning it up and here it comes again. It is not uncommon to go to sleep with grass showing and waking up to 9-12 inches of snow.

Hell, i remember one time after one of the bands off of the lake set up, i had 2 ft at my home, and my buddy in the same town 10 minutes away could see the grass still at his home.

Buying a truck without 4wd here would make little sense. I don't think i recall seeing more than a 6-8 prerunners ever here. Oddly, and in contrast, i have seen plenty of the short 2wds. Go figure.

Depends on what you call offroading. I don't consider a dirt road/gravel road 'offroading'. There are unpaved public roads around here that have ruts and puddles that you can drive a miata down just fine.

And if you do really offroad eventually you're gonna need it, or need someone to pull you.

You can obviously still have alot of fun in a 4x2 though.

    Or a winch.

I toyed with this issue before I bought my 2WD, and decided that I wanted a new truck that would meet 99% of my needs.

The other 1% I wanted more than just a stock 4WD: I wanted a specialized rock crawler, and I wasn't gonna buy a brand new truck and cut it all up to build one.

I'll wait to find a cosmetically tweaked 4x4 and cut that all up & mod it, then spray paint it with camo, because who wants to look at blue metallic pearl clear coat all covered in thorn scratches anyhow?

Get what YOU need/want. Yeah, that doesn't help much but that's because only you know your needs.

That argument is just as ridiculous now as it was the first time I heard it.

I have a Glock. Maybe I'll be in a situation where I'll need a SAW. Should I get one just because I MIGHT need it?

I could get a 4X4 Tacoma. But you never know, I MIGHT need an M1A1 Abrams.

Whoa dude. No need for this. Let's grow up here.

For the OP: Get what you truly need. If you're only going to use the 4x4 once or twice a year, save the money. ;)

    This.

Of course I wanted the 4x4 when I started shopping around. Few folks don't... But I sat and thought about it a while to see if I wanted the 4x4 or could actually find some way I'd need it. Aside from occasional trips to the beach where I'd rather be sitting on the sand rather than driving in it I knew I'd never have a real use for it. I live in the south, have a car seat in the back and use the truck for towing and hauling. How cool could I be crawling with a pink princess car seat, anyway?

We had an '87 full-size K5 Blazer (like this) for years... never once did I find a real use for its 4WD. Just keeping up with the maintenance on it was a pain. I'm not a wheeler... if you are (or even think you are) then get the 4x4. Otherwise skip it and spend the savings on mods! :D

That is exactly what I did.

A good driver in a prerunner makes it a VERY capable vehicle.

A good or even mediocre drive in a 4x4 makes a much more capible vehicle!

I think that would be more up your alley. Well, except that you probably already have things up your alley considering how badly your feelings get hurt. Go get some Vagisil and call it a day, sport.

Why get it if you don't need it? It makes to sense to get a 4x4 if you're only going to take it on a dirt road once a year. Come on now. I thought about a Pre-Runner because it was logical to only get what suits my needs. That extra money can go toward mods and/or gas, which I expect to see go sky high soon.
    Please stop.

I'm telling you... drop the $4K TRD package and pick up a SR5 4x4. If its about money the 4x4 will be a lot more handy than a locker... 2WD w/ locking diff < 4x4 w/o locking diff... There's you savings... $SR5 4x4 ~ $TRD Prerunner
