looking to purchase rack and pinion from an 04 4wd. Will this be a compatible rack for a 2003 prerunner. Or is the rack design diffrent.

Get the OEM setup with the later design rack guide. You can tell by the large hex on the back of the rack. If it looks like a ~24mm Allen socket, it’s the new style. If it looks like a cap screw, it’s the old style.

I paid ~$580 through McGeorge last month.

As mentioned all 6 lug 1st gen Taco racks are interchangeable. The later years had several upgrades, the "rack guide" was the important one.
    5lug racks are completely different.

It sounds as if you are buying used. If so, given the age of 1st gens there is a good chance the rack has been replaced. Sooooooo, verify you are actually getting an OE Toyota rack.
They will have "TOYODA" cast on the housing, rear driver side kinda behind the lines.

I’d stick with low miles oem over new China etc. hit or miss with these racks and it’s definitely a critical component. You can find them for sale on here.there also on eBay offering30day-6month warranty. If I didn’t go this route then I’d only deal with the rack doctor. 30 days to send in core and lifetime warranty
