    Hello all,
I've been researching what all is needed to convert my 2013 Prerunner DCLB to 4wd and I've got a few questions I was hoping someone could answer regarding the transmission and transfer case. I'm trying to figure out if it would be easiest to modify my existing trans with the Inchworm adapter plate or buy a 4wd trans and transfer case and bolt it in.

    1) If I remove my A340E trans and swap in a stock 4wd A340F trans, is it plug and play or will I need the computer out of the 4wd truck?

    2) If I use the Inchworm adapter plate for the A340E, all I'll do is have to trim off a piece of the tailshaft and bolt on a A340F tail housing correct? As in the trans does not have to be disassembled, adapter can be installed with the transmission still in the truck? (there are no instructions online for the adapter install that I could find)

    3) From what I've read the FJ Cruiser transfer case is manually shifted via linkage making it much easier for a swap (no 4wd computer or electronics needed), will it bolt right up to a stock A340F trans or would I need an adapter plate to mate it up? Any specific year range to look for before purchasing?

    4) if I go with the A340F transmission, any trans out of a 2005+ Tacoma 4wd will work correct? What about FJ Cruiser trans?

    5) I've seen several references to the Rocksolidtoys.com ADD actuator, but I did not find anything listed on their website, does anyone know if it was discontinued?

Any help with these questions so I can purchase the right parts would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Scott

    No mods whatsoever!
    1) Raise the hood
    2) Remove the radiator cap
    3) Drive a 4 wheel drive under it
    4) Done

Its easier than most folks think, and it has been done for less than 1000 bucks, if you source your parts right. Better, is you can use the manual T-case from the FJ.

    Bump.

I understand and appreciate the comments, however I'm still looking for some answers. I was able to speak with a salesman from Lowrangeoffroad.com today and got the info on the Inchworm adapter plate, just need to find the info on the stock trans option.

    Thanks

Well...YOu don't have the transmission you listed, but rather an A750E, IIRC.

    Shhh..... the grown-ups are talking.

    ------

OP, one thing to consider is if you are not sourcing the front differential locally, go through east coast gear supply and purchase one with an ARB air locker already installed. Might as well go all the way; will be ~$1,000 more in parts. You're already doing all the same labor.

Thanks for the tip Mxpatriot, I'll give East Coast Supply a call and see what they have.

    Thanks

The 340 is the 4 speed, and only behind the 2.7 in the second gen, which isn't an option on the DCLB, so he has the 750E. If he was 4x4, he would have the 750F.

Yes but there's no way you could source even used 2nd gen parts for under 1k. Even guys that had major 50% off hookups I've talked to said they were looking at $4k+ for the full swap.

there is already plenty of threads of this kinda work. search some more.

you have the a750 as everyone has stated since its a prerunner and obviously a v6 (id assume). if you do want to do the swap you might as well go straight to the fj cases, not hard at all. wyatt on rocksolidtoys sells some of the wiring youll need.

the inchworm adapter plate i think it is only for the a340, i dont think itll work with the a750.

to save you all the hassle, forward your money to wyatt and he'll just send you a kit with everything youll need to turn into 4 wheel drive. your truck is still so new, should of really decided on that before purchase.

Here.... maybe this will help. The first 2nd gen Tacoma 2wd to 4wd conversion and the first 4th gen 4Runner swap. 4runner 2wd to 4wd swap.

I've done the first conversion on both the 2nd gen Tacoma and the 4th gen 4Runners. If I were you, I'd look at selling my truck if it's still stock and finding a 4wd. If it's already highly modified, wheels, tires, bumpers and such, then you can look into this swap. I have all the instructions and the very best way to accomplish this swap. And yes! It will cost you more than $1000.00, even if you do it all yourself.

Adam (Newlife) has $2,500 in sourcing all the parts. Everything is sitting at his house right now, Just hasn't done the swap yet.

I'll believe that when I see it. When he's all done lets see a receipt for full cost. Also, is he doing the labor all himself (IE fabbing a new crossmember and installing everything?) or is he having a shop do it. Point is, you're not doing it for under a grand.

Thats still $1500 more than $1000. And he wont be done with that talley either. It will go higher. especially when it comes to the electronics and the rear drive shaft.

It's all sitting there. Most of the parts were pulled by him at a junkyard from a tacoma totaled from the rear iirc. Maybe one or two things were bought new. Everything is being installed him. Add and everything is there. Wiring, the Ecu, fj case, front and rear shafts, hubs, cvs, trans. You name it and it's there. It can all be sourced and purchased relatively cheaply if you don't rush and you wait for the right deal.

I'm not disputing him, I'm just sharing my experience with assisting in gathering parts for a 4wd swap.
