Hey Guys. Thinking about converting my Prerunner to 4wd. I know I’ll need front axle assembly, hubs etc. which transfer case is the easiest to do. Is there a write up maybe showing parts? I’m also not opposed to just buying oe parts. I much rather have a manual tcase if possible. Thanks for any help and suggestions.

The amount of $$$$ and the numbers of hours of work to do the conversion would be unbelievable. It would be far cheaper and you’d save hundreds of hours of your time to sell your truck and buy a 4x4 Taco. And when you go to sell the truck few people will want to buy it. If it’s what you really want to do then go for it. But out of curiosity why do you want to go to all that expense and hassle as opposed to selling your truck and buying what you want?

That is my other option. I’m not a big fan of the 3rd gen and trying to find a 2015 4wd as clean and well kept as my current truck is very hard but I’ve been looking.

If you have an older truck with sentimental value and if you are able to do most of the work yourself it is possible to break even on cost. Otherwise it is usually cheaper to just sell/trade and buy a 4X4. But if you were planning on heavily modifying a 4X4 after you get it anyway then it might not matter what you start with.

    Some stuff here and there
I'm literally about to finish up the front end this weekend by adding cv axles and I'll be done with my conversion in about a week, while during the week only working on it after work a couple hours. It's heavy stuff, but not that complicated and I did it on my driveway floor by myself except for an extra hand during the transmission swap.PXL_20240118_011002441.MP.jpg

I did it in 2014...Sold my 2006 Pre Runner and bought a new 2014 Sport. But seriously, if you have the time, money, talent, and space? Fun project, good luck.

For ref: Sold 2006 PR for $15,500, bought the 2014 Sport for $32,300 (I see my year and mile truck on CL for $25/28k regularly)

The actual conversion will take a weekend if you have all of the parts. The hundreds of hours though definitely is spent on researching and purchasing/locating parts lol

Nah, I know a couple people who did it. They had already invested a lot in the truck so it makes sense sometimes.

I always laugh when people say stuff like what that guy said. It really only cost me like 3 grand lol and you could probably knock it out in a couple of weekends if you worked on it all day. Almost everything is bolt on. It was well worth it like you said sense i already had alot invested and truck was paid off def made sense. @gotoman1969 look over my build thread. also the above link labeled conversion guide for dummies is really good.
