What parts do I need to convert a 2001 prerunner to 4wd?

A donor 4x4 vehicle is a good start on the big pile of parts you would need,,if it can be done.

I am going to save you the later-on aggravation of all of these types of responses like the one I am about to lay on you.

    Sell your 2wd and find a 4wd.

Not trying to be a A-hole,,just a realist.

    ^^^^^^^ this ^^^^^^^^^^^^

in the long run this IS the best solution because you basically have to replace so much its not worth doing unless you want to spend twice what the truck is worth and a year out of your life sorting out the associated mess in doing it.

now since this is your second post asking about this I would assume you don't want to hear why you shouldn't do it and just want to know "what" you need to do to make it happen and my other answer still holds true, you need a donor truck or it will cost you more then the trucks value is.

short answer is - everything but the wheels, frame, engine, suspension, and the body must be replaced

it really is one of those situations where you have 5 steps:

    1 - open hood
    2 - remove radiator cap
    3 - replace truck
    4 - reinstall radiator cap
    5 - close hood

    and your done

not being sarcastic here but its just way way too much stuff you have to swap out so sell yours and buy a 4wd and fix it up

now all that said, if you really are going to do this then you need a 4wd guy to give you this list but right off you will for sure need the front and rear axles and everything they connect to and the tranny and transfer case. your suspension should be fine unless you want a lifted truck since prerunners already have the basic 4wd suspension.

that's about all the help I can offer except to say there are many other things cooling related that must be changed like the radiator and a few other things for oil and PS cooling.

    damn thats funny!!

but really a parts truck, wreck, rollover etc.

Without access to a vehicle i could see this nickel and diming you for all the parts you didnt think of first. Everyone is gonna state the obvious major mechanical parts you need. but you need to speak with someone who has done this that can tell you about minor differences that will make you tired of spending money.

Quite a few folks have done this mod for under 1000 buck. Best is to source your parts from a junk yard, or a totaled out 4x4.

Mine ran a little over 2K. But I also regeared both diffs and added an ARB rear locker. I collected parts from all over. Complete list of parts needed available at the TTORA forum. Just search...

Do not get discouraged by others comments, it is actually not that hard of a mod as everything is bolt on for pre-runners. It took me only four days to change my engine and do my 4x4 conversion.

I would defiantly recommend finding a donor truck of the same year to make everything easier, but with your truck being a 2001 I believe you have more make and model options available to you.

    Parts you will need:
    1. L&R front spindles
    2. CV Axles (buy new)
    3. Front Diff (check options of ADD)
    4. Transmission & TC
    5. TC drive shaft
    6. Fwd and rear drive shaft
    7. Wire harness (I believe you can do without but I recommend)
    8. Interior shift cover
And that is basically it. I would replace your ball joints at the same time. You will also need the nuts and bolts for the front diff, so make sure you get as whole assembly, and they don't cut it out. Lastly just change all your fluids. For everything your probably looking around $1,500, but you can sell your 2wd parts and get some of that back. Good luck

I swapped my 01 dc from prerunner to a crawler last year cost me around 11k+$ this included parts, labor, fluids, tires and rims. Its cheaper to sell your 2wd and get a 4wd. I decided to sas her its b'cuzz i had her for so long ever since she was a virgin from factory this bond is hard to break off.
Major mods are tg housing, yukon gears n axles, detroit front locker n trd rear locker and 4:88 gears, tranny from auto to 5 speed manual. 80 land cruiser rotor, 86 4runner brakes n calipers. The headache is to rewire the manual tranny to the new m/t ecu to kill the engine check light (cell light).
When you decide to sas buy new parts dont use old parts as you already know junks will give you troubles down the road.

Already been shown to not be the case. Easy to do a 4x4 conversion, and less money.

I think people get confused by the process used, if you go buy everything you need new then yes its cheaper to sell yours and buy another one but if you source used parts for the majority of what you need it is very affordable for the most part but its still not what I would call a cheap conversion

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Yep, it's pretty easy to do on the first gens, second gens are a different story. If you have the time and dedication it isn't hard. Converting an automatic trans first gen to a M/T first gen is an easy swap to if you have all the parts. If my double cab was a toy and not a daily driver, I'd have already swapped in a 5 speed by now, but I want an auto for my daily driver. Drove stick shifts for years as DD and never want to again, lol!

In most all cases, its less expensive to do than a supercharger, but you don't hear people telling other folks to trade in and get a supercharged Tacoma.

good point, but doesn't it depend a lot on the skill of the guy your posting to, if he is a noob with a cool idea he read about on a forum or a guy who knows how to do his own mechanic work and can handle such a job.

Yeah, if you can install a suspension, you can do this.

I converted my prerunner to an all wheel drive system, all I had to do was trade it in for a Subaru.

As one 4x4 conversion to another, spend the time researching and figuring out what you need instead of just getting the answers. You will answer all of your questions in the research.

not many will buy new. there is no warranty on our trucks anymore so have fun with it. breaking and fixing is half the learning process.

^QFT, do all the research and get a budget to make sure you can start and finish within a timeline. if this is your DD then take a couple weeks vacation :)

Just found a '98 4x4 with a rotten frame that ought to match up to my '99 pre. The only difference is that it's a stick. As much as I'd like to go 3 pedal, I can't. I've never done this kinda swap, but I've torn down suspensions and swapped motors in my day. Never on a yota though.

    I'm thinking about it.

I think the angle of the J-shift is different for manuals. hopefully someone can speak up if it's the same transfer case or not :notsure:
