Now i know its supposed to be cheaper to sell my truck and buy a 4x4 but that wont work for me and i love my truck too much to sell it right now. So back to the topic. Wouldnt it just be a matter of getting a front diff, cv's, and shifter from a similar year taco to convert it? let me know if im forgetting anything else

and a Transfer case, etc. Its cheaper to convert to 4x4 than trade. A few folks have do it for less than $1000.00

the Prerunner transmission has different transmission mounts and i believe longer than the 4x4 transmission.

I've seen people fabricate a mount for the PreRunner transmission and run their original transmission- Its just easier to put in all new

Labor intensive receipt... But honestly it would be better for you to know what to do- That way if something screws up down the road you know where to look at instead of being like

The tools needed are basic hand tools.. and a cheater bar

Getting a shop to do it is gonna be ridiculous unless youve got some really good friends and theres a company that makes a mount for our transmission

Not to mention you should switch your tranny to a manual :D:D

But you should totally do the conversion, then show us how it went/what you did. I'm sure there's a lot of people who want to see it.

If you search around for good deals on parts, you can complete the swap for under $1,000. I was able to complete mine for $800 or $900 after selling my prerunner transmission. You'll need:

4wd transmission (make sure it's from a vehicle with the same motor you have)
    Transfer case
    Front diff
CV's with matching spindles (either manual hubs or ADD)
    Front driveshaft
Interior components (shifter for the t-case, consoles, new shift boot)

It's possible to use the prerunner transmission and convert it to 4wd but it involves disassembly of the entire transmission to swap output shafts. That seemed like more work than it was worth so I decided to swap transmissions instead.

For what it costs to complete a 4wd swap, it's MUCH cheaper than just buying a 4wd truck. Take for instance double cabs, here in CA, you can find prerunner double cabs all day long but 4wd double cabs are a different story. You'll easily spend 3-4k more on the 4wd because dealerships and private party sales know they are worth their weight in gold.

Now lets say you own a prerunner and want a 4wd, in order to get the most for your money, you'll have to sell the prerunner private party (you won't get shit for a trade in) and hopefully, within reasonable time find a 4wd. Now what is that 4wd costing you? I never understood the mentality that it's cheaper to just trade it in on a 4wd; what are you worth? A million bucks?

The mount FOR a prerunner transmission is different than the 4wd but they mount in the same exact spot on the truck. The only difference between a 4wd transmission and Prerunner transmission is the 4wd torque converter has a higher stall, the 4wd has a different tail housing and shorter output shaft. Other than that, they are identical.

you will need a A340F tranny if you want an automatic.

When i converted mine i just slowly started buying parts and before you know it you will have what you need. and dont let people getcha down. i came out cheaper buying a prerunner and converting it than if i would have bought a 4wd... plus i wouldn't have had manual hubs if i had just bought one...

I will try and get it together... there are a few things you will need from a few things from toyota. plus beware... if you get a tranny from a 4runner you will have some fun piecing together parts so your speedometer will work. but let me know and i have part # since i work at carquest it made things a good bit easier. all the brakes are the same, and the only difference in the spindles is the wheel bearing.

with manual hubs and a manual transfer case you dont have to worry about changing the computer, plus 1) manuals just look cool since they didn't offer them on my style (01-04). 2) when they are locked, you know that they are locked 3) less to go wrong... but its all personal prefference

i will try and get a list together on everything... i had a good bit in mine, but i also paid someone to install instead of me doing it... all in all i came out cheaper and i think its worth every penny!
