Rear main seal - replace the liquid gasket around the cover? Or just pop off and replace?

seems they don’t replace the gasket in the FSM

I scrapped off the old stuff and put new Toyota black RTV around it, figured why not. You can also pull the seal off without removing the cover if you have the right tool

I don't think anyone has the right tool LOL. I changed my RMS when I did my clutch. You can remove the old seal with a screwdriver or a drywall screw, just be careful not to score the crankshaft. I did not pull the rear cover to re-seal. The directions from Toyota to pull that rear cover are to pull to pan as well for a "proper" install. That RTV on the rear cover should last the life of the vehicle, I've never seen a leak there.
