Tell that to the 2WD guys I pull up hills when we go off roading.. just saying ;)

They do make it up quite a bit of stuff if the truck came with a locker though.

Still no replacement for that extra shaft up front. :D

I agree. pre runners are cool for fast off roading!

It would seem more pre runners are owned in the lower half of the states.
Where as in my area we all drive 4x4 because of that snow stuff.

chris and i had a discussion similar to this the other night...

when youre speeding along in the desert...a lot of times you dont get that "oh shit" moment before you fuck up...

when youre crawling around on the rocks...and get a teeter totter effect going and changing your steering by an inch can send you tumbling end over end off a side of a mountain...

THAT is a seat puckering experience

then again SR5 stands for Sport rally 5 speed.
Yet seems to be they make a lot of sr5 automatics.

i honestly wanted a prerunner 2.7. i love the 2.7, but i never use my 4WD really. but when you come across a 98 reg cab 4WD with 21,000 miles for 6,500 bucks...how could you turn that down?

but there again..it pops up out of nowhere...i dont think you get the same butt puckering taste seat upholstery from the wrong way oh shit factor

there its more of an "oh shit oh shit oh shit...done"

regardless...i think both styles of offroad are cool in their own aspects...and if i lived out there where all i had was sand...then id LT a truck etc etc...

instead im building a truck that can go anywhere and still work properly after it ends up upside down :)

I get more excitement from the higher speed desert running in my Tacoma. in my 4x4's, I get a "Hey....Watch this" kind of excitement. in the 30 years I have been off roading, I have been in SO many different off rad experiences, and its really hard to say which gives the biggest "thrill". On the rocks, rou can have an "Oh shit" moment last for 30 seconds. In the high speed stuff, it can last half a second. Either one will cause you to need a break, and pull the underware out of your butt. I can respect all wheeling, and the different vehicles eaqually. This being my first 4x2, I can attest, I REALLY enjoy throwing the tail out at 50+ mph on a desert trail. Im not saying that you cant do the same thing in a TAcoma 4x4, but knowing you dont have a front drive to pull you out of a tough situation kinda adds to the thrill....

    Thats the truth.

The snow is definitely when 4 WD comes into play. 2 wheel drive vehicles can't get out of their own way when driving in the kind of snow we get around here for several months out of the year.

Outside of the snow, i could understand why it could be overkill for a lot of the southern guys. (And gals)

    Prerunner haters can suck it.

My truck may be 2wd but I know how to drive it... Hell I'd be willing to bet my truck gets beat on more off road than most 4x4s I see on the road every day.

Or...when you're attempting to climb a steep hill for the 3rd attempt. The only amount of time you have is to say, "Oh shit, HOLD ON!!" before you go tumbling end-over-end down the hill backwards. :D

or when youre going DOWN a steep drop off SLOWLY and the truck goes up on its nose and teeters there for a few seconds and all you can see is ground out of the front window....and then it just slowly goes on over despite having the presence of mind to hit the gas...and a small tree and a handful of mud keeps you from going end over end all the way down the hill...

I think 2wd trucks have a purpose...and not as just a girls truck either :p

for example...chris has several other 4wd and 6wd vehicles that he can use to go offroad...he doesnt need 4wd...it doesnt get icy where he lives...so why pay for it if you dont need it?

BUT for those of us who dont have spare trail/offroad only vehicles...4wd can be a handy thing...even if youre out there running around in the sand jumping dunes and shit

I'm glad i bought the 4wd personally...even though I couldve bought a prerunner...i never wouldve gotten into wheeling if i didnt have 4wd (which couldve been a good thing) but there have been times out at our land that i've NEEDED 4wd for vehicle recovery and maint of the property...a 2wd wouldve probably NOT been able to recover my dad's z71...or our '53 Ford Tractor...or my uncles F250...

A lot depends on the driver too...an experienced wheeler with a 2wd can PROBABLY do better than an inexperienced driver with 4wd...

I'd bet there are some prerunners here that could come to the east coast and outwheel some of the folks with 4wd over here

If I had a dollar for everytime someone asked me:

"hey man, do you think you could put four wheel drive in my prerunner?"

I'd have a bit more money than I do now.
I've never heard someone wanting to rid their 4x4 of the xfer case and drive axles to make their truck "lighter and more nimble" off road.

    Off topic:
MikeyD, do you have aftermarket seals on your Taco's doors so you can bake it down hippie style a little better than stock. I'll bet you should make a writeup of how to improve the hippie pot smoking characteristics of yotas. LOL
