Preventative measures for failure of secondary air pump

Hello taco heads. I read a bunch and I don't want this to be another 2nd air pump failure post but Im thinking of doing the unimod filter and taking out the foam one. Im terrified as I have a 2012 2.7, but what preventative measures for failure of secondary air pump would you guys recommend? I want to blow out the line but if the foam filter if fine Ill just take it out. I really just want to make sure nothing enters the valve.

 

The Uni filter mod is about the only preventative you can do, I'm not sure about the 4cyl trucks but the V6 trucks had a higher failure rate on the valves which they fixed on the newer ones by programming the pump to run at shutdown to purge moisture from the lines.

 

I did the unimod filter on my 2.7 and haven't had any issues.

 

just remove the foam filter, don't overthink it. If you pull it out and some pieces break out, just vacuum them up. No need to blow air in as you would just be shoving pieces further in.

Just do it and forget about it forever.

 

Thanks guys, order filter and will install when I get it. It only uses one valve and doesnt have that turn on at the end to get moisture out.

 

I don’t think you have much to worry about. It was the 2012 v6 trucks that had the most issues since that was the first year they got the pump.

the 2TR-FE has had the SAI pump since 2005

unifilter would be good preventative maintenance. If yours fails, then check out Hewitt tech. They make a bypass that’s plug and play

 

I did mine and was wondering if I'd need to do anything extra since mine is 6 yrs old and hadn't had the mod. I decided to check out the sponge to see if it had degraded. Mine looked brand new, so I just proceeded with the standard mod (no extra measures).

Thanks, I ended up getting a 1" clamp on motorcycle filter for 7 bucks form Amazon. It has chrome on it too (the only on my base model).

 

I got the HT kit mentioned above for my ‘12 V6 and aside from a possibly related CEL that came on once, I’ve been worry free.

 

The filter isn't the only cause of failure in these. There are internals in the pump that also fail. The filter on my 2012 was still 100% intact when the secondary air pump failed.

 

Would residue back flow into the valve possibly cause it to fail then? If the pump never sucks back after it is a tube to the valve, could you seafoam it or is that a really stupid idea? As some one mentioned Im overthinking it, I need to move onto other preventative maintenance.

 

I wouldn't worry about it too much, I don't see many posts about Secondary Air Injection problems on the 4cyl trucks.

 

So foam filter was fine, just waiting for filter now.

 

Cutting kind of short but I'm taking my '12 in to the dealer on Monday. Just have to remember to take the Uni Filter off & put the original back on.

 

Oh doesnt that upset you, they made a mistake and you fix it then have to turn it back.

So considering the cost I just got the $28 unifilter, if its my only preventative maintenance... Im guessing the added cost its, for a 1" breather filter, its coated with polysomething, is washable and filters better? Its kinda like everyone liking K&N but the best filtration is dry paper.

Programing the ECU to kick on when turning off (like 13 on) would be hard I imagine?

Ahh ok. I wasnt sure if that service campaign for the 2012's would re-program the ECU to do the purge cycle at shutdown. Or if it was just new parts
