Oh yeah- also keep a bar of ivory soap in your tool kit. If you ever need an emergency gas tank plug, whittle one out of the soap - gas doesn’t dissolve it. I used it to temporarily stop the leak from the hole the jerk drilled in my tank (discovered the hole when I filled up), and also used it on a accidental tank puncture a guy had while off-roading.

Exactly. Prevents gas tank drilling and catalytic converter thefts. I'll never park a car outside.
I'm surprised we haven't seen a cigarette-smoking gas thief self-immolate. It just seems like the natural progression of things.

Maybe so, but as someone who's had to reinvent themselves a few times, seems like if you're an able-bodied person without an extensive rap sheet, you probably could change your circumstance. Let's be honest, we're in a 3rd gen Tacoma forum; a truck that most people bought new (or not-so-used) for a good price. Seems like if you're capable of affording these trucks, your capable of living in a nice place with less crime (somewhere).

I have heard of this happening and thought of one way, put a false tank underneath. Fill it with gas and sugar. It will smell enough like gas that they don't notice and it will cost them

You're talking about the "war on drugs" model. After 30-40 years of trying that approach there's ample evidence that it doesn't work. Jails are full, courtrooms are backlogged, municipalities are bankrupt, drug abuse and petty crime is still just as high as it was back then. We're paying top dollar for law enforcement to chase after homeless people and deal with all the stupid petty crime that comes with housing insecurity and people living under the freeway

The math behind the hardliner approach simply doesn't add up.

There's a lot to discuss about cheaper more effective solutions. I'm not saying we need to let the criminals off the hook, what I'm saying is that from a money/budget perspective we're throwing resources at a model that doesn't work. "Sympathy for the criminal" has nothing to do with it, it's more about the math involved and looking at what actually works and what doesn't work. But that's a conversation for another forum..

Stucco the tank with a healthy layer of dogshit. It wont stop anything, it'll just make them wonder.

I fill between 10-15 1 gallon milk jugs with gas and keep them in my refrigerator. Thieves won't know to look there for it.

If everyone that wanted to move, moved out of the city to more rural areas, the rural areas become the city. Trust me I know as it’s happening where I live. Plus, some people need to live in more densely populated areas for their livelihood. Where you live is to large degree a choice but there’s a lot of surrounding factors that play in. Not everyone can say “welp my gas tank got drilled, my cat got stolen and there’s a crack head down the block. I’m gonna up and move!”

If you think ppl in this day and age can just wave a wand and have a massive crib with their own garage, you're probably entitled, out of touch with reality and/or delusional.

Or a boomer who bought his mini mansion in '77 for 130k no money down.

Spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on a new house to eliminate risk of gas theft is like getting a face transplant when you have a wart on your nose.
