Doesn't matter where one lives. Long ago my attorney said something that still sticks with me and I've said it to many.

If you were looking to steal something, would you be more likely to go to a good area where you might find something and have less risk of bodily harm..or a bad area where you might not find it and have more risk of personal injury?

This is true. But nicer areas are more heavily policed and the police have less to do so you’re also more likely to get caught. Plus traveling to commit crime takes a lot more effort and logistics than robbing your neighbor two blocks over. Lastly I really don’t think your average everyday criminal puts much thought into what they are doing.

I got the locking cap to avert some asshole from putting damaging crap IN TO my tank.

Haven't figured out any sure way to keep them from getting fuel out of it yet...

Some good points here, though I think if it was me I'd rather risk the police than someone who might be armed/have a lot of big friends/etc there.

I suspect most don't travel long distances of course at least not for that express purpose as well.

I grew up in a rich quiet town and there were not many police officers on the force per capita as opposed to surrounding towns back in the day. You're right about less to do..to the point where I remember working in a store in the town and calling police several times for shoplifters but never once did they actually care to come to the store and do anything.

No doubt re the last piece in general, most thefts are crimes of opportunity.

Though there's always anomalies. My dad's 10 year old Chevy Citation was broken into while at the repair shop and the column punched, though they weren't able to start it. Why that car, and not the several other nice vehicles? My guess is they figured a bucket would not have an alarm system or other anti theft features (back in the early 1990s).

Back in the 80s, my dad owned a couple of businesses and he never drove his Cadillac to the bank. He would drive the old beat up Impala and put the deposit money in a paper bag.

I'm not sure how to do this without going through a lot of trouble but I'm thinking you should make a honeypot with poisoned gas. Something like n-heptane which dissolves rubber and smells like gasoline.

All you need to do is figure out a way to get said thieves to steal the honeypot.

That would also work with catalytic converters. A dye pack like they use in bundles of money and wired in to only work when the vehicle is not running.

We need to go in business.

    Mechanics might object...

Move and park it in a garage suggestions are not helpful, plus already mentioned.
There is a ring video online of a truck with a motion activated sprinkler in the bed- some guy on a bike rode up to it and got hosed. I’d worry about the rock through the back window afterwards…

Maybe a motion sensor triggered by vibration?

Getting back to the original question, OP did ask for a physical solution, not a political one. So far, “garage” seems to be the best option. Next best seems to be lights, either on your driveway, or parking in a well-lit and/or occupied area.

Frankly I don't get it at all.
First you put yourself at physical risk of playing with gasoline for what... $20-$30 bucks worth of gas?
Second, you put yourself at physical risk of getting your ass kicked... for $20-$30 bucks worth of gas?

Isn't it just easier to get a job? Not like there aren't any jobs out there.
