A few minutes ago some people came to my front door while I was reading this thread. A young man and a woman. I’m not sure what they wanted but there is a no solicitation sign on my door. They broke the law twice by ringing the door and knocking.

They looked at my camera several times.

I didn’t answer the door. I never do. But if they break in, they’ll be sorry.

They went away but they didn’t look they were selling Girl Scout cookies.

    Stay alert.

I would be loud inside the home so at least the "salesmen" knew I was ignoring them. GTF off my porch always works too.

Could be a religious group. They seem to never know what "No soliciting" signs mean.

There is plenty of theft these days. Wife just called and said our CC got hacked again. 3000.00 in charges.

    Go figure.

Tape a $20 bill to your gas tank or inside your gas door?

Put a scapegoat can of "gas" in the back of your truck? Put some stickers on your gas door and tank that say "check the bed for free gas"? But then there's the possibility they will take the free tank & still drill your gas tank. Possibly, you could go ahead and drill a hole in your tank & install a drain plug/valve for them to use. At least then you wouldn't have to get a whole new tank.

Otherwise, not many options. Locks, gates, etc. only keep honest people out.

Correct but that’s not my point. similar to if we all had guns criminals would think more about pulling shit. If we all had one gallon of gas in our tanks they may think differently about coming and getting it.

My Land Cruiser came from the factory with a skid plate surrounding the tank. So good luck to them.

Ummm you do realize that drill bits go through skid plates too, right?

Unless you got the Vibranium option from the factory, then you're fine.

I've got a steel gas skid from RCI and not under any impression it will help in this situation.

If they have to drill through something like a skid plate the fuel won’t drain unimpaired through the hole and will be extremely difficult for the fuel to pour directly into their container.

I mean I feel we're just quibbling (ha see what I did there?) over flow rates of holes in skid plates now. You got me curious I went to Youtube and searched drilling gas tanks. This is a screenshot from the very first search result from a Fox 5 news report. Are you telling me that gas won't drain unimpaired from a hole that size through a skid plate? I will concede that it would take much longer to drill a hole that size through a steel skid plate though (aluminum not so much which would be the VAST majority of skids out there, especially factory)

I haven't seen a factory Land Cruiser skid but on the Taco RCI setup, all you'd have to do is drill the side of the tank about 2 inches off the bottom, but that would also mess with the flow I suppose. Who the hell knows I'm not going to try and delve into the mind of some junkie and try to determine how much spillage is acceptable to them during the commission of their crimes.

The whole thing just seems insane to me. All that effort & risk for what, like $20 in gas? I don't see how they could get much more than 5 gallons and walk away, if that. At least with the cats I can understand the risk/reward a little bit better.

That does make sense, thank you for sharing.

I myself identify with the stereo part of this. I'm almost 50 but grew up in a town that was very much a wealthy town. My folks weren't wealthy at all but very wise about money in general and have always been very frugal. Never bought expensive cars or nice clothes, went on trips, etc..was more important to have a quiet area for my sister and I to grow up and to send us to private schools. Point is I was taught at about toddler age and probably before to take care of things and they will last you, and just because you want something doesn't really mean you need it. Oddly the stereo I bought in college when my old one died still sits in my house, let's just say it's before even the Dolby Pro Logic systems. Does what I need it to do though.

I was almost carjacked once when I was 20, for the $400 POS I owned. Even if I had a weapon I was not about to go that route especially since I didn't know if there was more than the one person in the area, plus obviously my life is worth more than my beater even though it was once my grandparents' car.

I have seen those on video as well as stills. If you remember long ago the stocks in the town square or the book "The Scarlet Letter", more examples that come to mind.

I wish religious folk would come calling on me some day at home. I'd make damn sure to roll up my sleeves even if it's freezing so my tattoos are very visible, let's just say at least one would offend some religious folks including my parents who haven't yet seen it in the few years I have had it.

Yup. Had an unemployment claim opened in my name 3 years ago as well.

Its not the 1850s anymore. You can have tattoos and go to church. A few of my pastors growing up had tattoos.

Agreed. Both my kids have them. I wasn't thrilled about it, but it's their choice too. My son is 32 a small business owner and a great son and father; he the most honest and solid man I know. My daughter is 23, has a Master's degree, a high school teacher, and is a youth group leader at our church. For my generation (I'm 57) it's a little stigmatized, but I've come to understand it a little better and don't look at it like I used to.

Agreed, I've always felt it is what the tattoo is and (to a degree) where it is.

My dad took it better than I expected when I got my first one (my zodiac glyph) since he always said he'd kick me out if I ever got one in my college years. My mom shed a tear just about and said "I never thought you would if you didn't before now". I was 41 then.

In my specific case, one tattoo is something that just to look at would offend religious folks and perhaps moreso if I explain it. Ask if you want to see
