It's provided by the buyer. And then you (not you specifically but in general YOU because these threads all fo the same way) say "I never told anyone what I paid". Then I say "yes you did. And you say "no I didnt" and I say etc.

Anyway, did you (collective you again) buy a PP lately? For this scenario you say yes. Did you title and register it? You say yes again. Aaaand the state you registered it collected sales tax? Yes. Which means you had to provide a bill of sale? Yes. And that information is logged as X vehicle sold for Y dollars in Z state by private party. That information is available, collected and made public.

I've been working in similar a similar field for 14 years. It's pretty straight forward. You have 1000 units with an asking price of 10 bajillion dollars. 99% of them eventually sell for $1.50. 1% actually buys 1 for 10bjillion because they only looked at asking, not sold data.. The value is $1.50 and 1% overpaid. His isn't worth 10b, its worth 1.50. Asking price is irrelevant but it will easily let you screw yourself. Unless you found a genie and granted a wish that every dollar you spend gets you 1.01 in return. Then go nuts :)

The state provided info or the public? I don't have access to the state info, just the collected summary.

collected summary is probably good, i suppose the state info has personal details which should not be public!

Ok, that's all nada and kbb are. Neither assign value to anything. They collect data and make it public. That's it. I spend hours doing similar work. For cars it's available in seconds to anyone.

Literally every forum dedicated to every vehicle ever made has the same threads on price, the same people saying "you can't trust... these things go for way more" etc. Basically saying ignore the 20 million actual reported sales because 10 of us think you should pay more because of what I see on craigslist. Not me, though, I got an amazing deal on mine, only paid book...

A taco isn't a super rare item that's impossible to comp sales. There's thousands of them for sale. Thousands that sell every year. They're easy.

100k miles. Sorry, I forgot that crucial bit of info. I just edited my original post to include it.

Here in the Bay Area, $10k for a 1st Gen 3.4L TRD 4x4 SR5 with only 100k miles is almost unheard of. It's not a steal of a price, but it's pretty damn good. That truck could/should/would sell for $13k+ here. Which is insane because KBB puts it at $6500-$8500. Everyone I talk to around here says we got a really good deal, but that's relative to one's location. Too many rich people around here lol

Basically, I had a saved Craigslist search that alerted me to this truck back in January. Dude put it up for like $7500 or so. I emailed him same day, no reply, and the ad was deleted right away. I figured it was gone. One week later same truck pops up for $10,400 and again I email same day. Later I get a reply basically saying "Lots of interest, we're going to show the truck tomorrow in the parking lot of this grocery store. Come check it out and we'll see who gets it." I hated that arrangement and figured we'd never be the high bidder, but we (gf and myself) did the 60+ minute drive up there and arrived 15 mins early. We were first on the scene when the truck rolled up. I quickly got underneath, then under the hood, then test drove it. We somewhat foolishly brought cash, so we offered the full asking price and since no other bidders had shown up yet--we got it.

Ok yeah. 100k miles changes things a lot.

I definitely paid market price, but I was happy because the truck was well cared for, Bluetooth stereo, alarm system, along with some other nice comforts.

In the end I figured I could continue searching and find a deal for 1k maybe $1,500 less but not much less than that.

Also I bought my truck 15 miles from my house. So convenience was a factor.

Yeah I paid another $900 for the SnugTop XtraVision camper shell, but it's paint matched since it came off another identical lunar mist Tacoma. That was a Craigslist score from SF. The tires were old and cracking despite having plenty of tread, so I replaced those with 265/75/16 Duratracs. Leaf springs were halfway used up so I went ahead and replaced those with General Spring standard duty, Wheelers 3-leaf progressive 1.5" AAL, four Bilstein 5100 shocks and OME 881 coil springs. Then replaced stock front bumper with Trail Gear low profile. New wheels, grill, corner lights (cosmetic reasons). Upgraded the speakers and stereo. New plugs and ignition wires. Just did the LBJs and the inner axle seals. So yeah, spent a lot more on the upgrades.

I wish we could debunk the myth of the magical bulletproof Tacoma. There seems to be this misconception out there that you can go buy a 1st gen Tacoma and it'll run for 400k miles without any repairs/maintenance. That has not been my experience, and I bought a low milage gently-used garage-kept California truck, so I should have it easiest of any buyer as far as repairs. But after one summer of moderate weekend wheelin' all of my ball joints were leaking, axle seals leaking, etc. Great trucks, don't get me wrong, but the reputation is getting out of hand and driving up prices.

To be fair that’s a 17 year old truck. Let’s see how much maintenance you’ll need now that the truck is closer to new.

And in the grand scheme of things you put about 3k of maintenance in the truck, maybe you’ll have to do this 1 or 2 more times in the trucks lifespan.

    That’s not so bad...

That being said I definitely should be thinkin about my LBJs....

True. And it has been fun/rewarding learning to do all this work myself. I'm not trying to crap all over these trucks, I just think the perception a lot of potential buyers have is out of line with reality. They are dependable trucks, no doubt.

I do agree. I saw your thread on the LBJs and am considering doing them myself but my hesitation is I don’t have a driveway or garage so I’d be doing it in the middle of the street in West Oakland. I had at least 5 crackheads come up to me while doing the t case, rear and front diff etc.

This is true, EXCEPT... I would say that 90% of people that buy via private party Lie and say they paid less for the car than they actually did. The conversation basically goes like this between the buyer and seller, Buyer says: “Hey can we just write that I paid $5,000 and not the actual $12,000 so I can save some money on the taxes?” The seller says: Yeah sure that’s not a problem, I’ll put on this release of liability that you paid only $5,000 and you put that you paid only $5,000 on the back of the title” the DMV will never look further into it or be able to prove it was sold for $13,000 the buyer and seller assume, and usually they would be correct. (Keep in mind this is transactions in California I am referring too, maybe a different process in other states.

Dealers on the other hand have a much harder time lying about a sale price, so if a dealer sells a Tacoma for $15,000 and a private party sells an Identical Tacoma for “$5,000” because the is the written or lied about price, but it’s actually sold for $13,000, what do you think KBB or similar will see in public sales/DMV records? They will just see two Tacoma’s that sold for $15,000 and $5,000 then they take the average of those two sales and the result is $10,000.

Soooo KBB may indeed not actually reflect true market value because the sales price information they receive is not accurate. Yes there are more details and exceptions to this exact equation but in general, I do not believe KBB or similar sites are very accurate. But I assure you that when it works in my favor to go with the KBB value, I do it every time!!!

i just did moderate wheelin' in Wisconsin this past summer that my truck has definitely NOT been accustomed to in the 2+ decades i have had it
hopefully i did not do any harm to it by taking it OUT of its 'comfort zone'
