Why are stores soo @n@l about their price match guarantee crap...

The Following Stores will NOT Price Match Amazon.com

    Best Buy
    Sears
    HH Gregg
    Wal-Mart
    Sam's Club
    Target
    KMart

Among I'm sure many others that are not in my local area..

    Why won't stores match Amazon's prices.. Wal-mart is all about finding out Best Buy (across the street) & Target (Across the Street) prices and have their TVs $1 less. Best Buy and Target both said they will price match any place within 10 minutes.. Woohoo $1.. So WTF, why wont they match the price when I ask how much is this TV.. oh $850 + tax... wow let me check oh this same exact TV is $811 ( No Tax & Free Shipping) on Amazon, {Which means they can't use the arguement that the extra $40 equals the shipping blah blah blah}

Why Wont the stores just match the price I want and make the sale. I know those TVs cost best buy/walmart etc .. next to peanuts .. so what does the $86 (after tax) matter to them.. When I tried the well if you wont price match ill just go shop somewhere else.. and Best buy and Walmart guy both told me to just order it on Amazon if I want to get the best deal.

You pay for convenience, some people aren't willing to wait the few days or a week for their TV. When I worked for best lie we would price match online and add next day shipping generally it would cost a little more than our advertised price. At the end of the day it's about their pocket not yours. However, we did offer a military discount or find a disgruntled employee and have them knock 15% off it can be done with out a manager override.

Because it cost more to run a brick and mortar store. And good luck if you should have a problem. Also, I bet if your employer told you, "It's only $86.00, what's that to you" and pulled that from your check, you would sing a different tune.

$86 could be alot to one person but not to a company.. and also If I ran Best Buy or Wal-mart I would price match Amazon atleast in Electronics, Movies, Games, Toys, Sports Equipment, etc..

So how long do you think those stores you mentioned would be in business if they gave every customer $86.00?

They would be in buisness for a long time because all the buisness they would lose to Amazon they will now get because people will shop in the store.. and when I go to the Store to buy my $800 tv Ill probobly by other things in the store.. similar to when i ordered it on amazon tonight i added some other things i was looking for..

Selling a TV for $800 instead of $900 is better than not selling a tv at all

Actually, no. This is not how business inventory works.

You see, retailers must purchase those goods from the manufacturer before they can sell them to you. So if it costs me $850 to buy a TV, and I price it at $900 so I may run a profitable business, it does me NO GOOD AT ALL to sell you the TV at a $50 loss. This is because:

    a) Someone else will pay a profitable price

    OR

    b) No one will pay a profitable price, and I will stop selling TVs so I can divert that $850 per TV to buying inventory people WILL buy at a profitable price.

So you see...no. That's why they won't price match Amazon. They'll lose money.

Edit: Also, WTF? If Amazon has it less expensive, why not buy it from Amazon?

I think the point of this thread is more that stores are advertising unconditional price matches, but arent actually matching prices

One of the rules of marketing is that whatever they're advertising is not what you get.

It depends, per product. When I worked for Best Buy (how's them fer sourcin'? :p) markup on printers, computer equipment, etc. was about 1 or 2%. Why do you think the USB cables cost $35 and the sales associates are so pushy about trying to get you to buy them? The profit is in the accessories. That's why Best Buy has HDMI cables that are 3' long and cost over $1000:

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/AudioQu...lack/2383276.p?id=1218324437192&skuId=2383276

    ANYWAY

The example was just that: an example. The point is, I as a retailer am not going to sell you a product below cost unless I'm making it up somewhere else.

You also have to take into consideration the overhead the company carries. You have building costs , emloyees salaries and benefits and so on. They may pay $500 dollars for the Tv from the manufacturer but that still isn't their cost in the end.

stores like best buy and other "brick and mortar" stores have to make a minimum profit just to turn the lights on - it's called overhead and it is a very real component of retail pricing. amazon doesn't have to deal with this same type of overhead, basically they are either drop shipping from a manufacturer directly and never even touch the product or it's coming from a warehouse. this is a huge advantage which is reflected in the pricing. that's why these other stores won't price match an online price.

BUT, places like Best Buy and the other physical stores offer relatively instant gratification that you can't get at Amazon - you go home with whatever you picked out in the store that day. you pay a little bit more for that convenience. whether it's worth it or not to you depends on where you purchase from.

i dont get why you are upset, congrats on saving a few bucks online, it's unfortunate you're not willing to support your local economy.

someone has to get that tv to the store, set up the display, and help customers buy their new tv. that's giving someone a job. it's also costing the store (best buy) to have that employee. seems fair to pay $86 more for a salesperson, no wait time, and a warranty you can use without shipping the tv back.

Very true. Overhead costs can be averaged among inventory to produce a profitable "total" that the item has to sell at or above for the store to make money. Most companies don't do the math this way though, and prefer to keep the inventory and overhead books separate. And there are a lot of good tax incentive reasons for doing that as a business.

Meh, he ain't really takin' away from it. Say people stop buying local and start ordering all their shit from Amazon. Well, if they do, UPS deliveries in his area are gonna blow up, so the jobs that disappear from Wal-Mart and Best Buy are gonna re-appear in UPS trucks and warehouses.

    It all washes.

    that's the troof, troof...

it depends on the brand. most of the big retailers don't have too much markup, but the names like coach and armani...they have ridiculous markups. A friend of mine works for coach and employee discount without markups is around 50-75%
