Disagree on the leverage to purchase -- that was the late 2020 until late 2021 story. Home values are due for the cyclical down value part of the cycle (directly dependent on the Fed funds rate plus business cycle), and used car values uniquely benefited from a combination of chip shortages (due to the genius marketing VPs of all auto manufacturers assuming no-one would drive for the whole pandemic, which the world would care about for at least 2 years, and thus cancelling orders for chips, which subsequently went to consumer electronic gizmo companies) and the ultra low interest rates that allowed dealers to buy literally anything that ran and resell for profit. Realistically the ultra low Fed fund rate in 2020 goosed all asset prices, leading to those with means snapping up all new vehicles across all sectors (also keep in mind those with means were the least likely to be affected by pandemic job cuts).

Now, home shortages (in US but also EU as well) will protect home values, but does not equal home spending power unless government bond interest rates are super low. Reason being, no rational person would willingly increase their mortgage rate beyond their original mortgage rate (narrow exceptions). Increasing the Fed Fund Rate directly impacts all sorts of loans and credit terms. So, vehicle manufacturers may rightly assume that decreased supply results in higher prices -- they will eventually discover that the world has a finite supply of demand. The only resulting settled price of a new vic is determined by the impatience of the Instagram bro vs the dealers monthly throughput requirements...

I've never done a trade in so I have a 2012 Forester that eats a little oil has 145000 miles on it. Do I tell them that it eats oil or do I say nothing and take what they offer for it? It runs good and If you run heaver oil in it takes a quart every two thousand miles.

I'm thinking on the Trail Edition or the Sport for a new truck.

Are you familiar with suspension components???

I can't tell from the one pic, but it could possibly have cheap-o brand lift kit that makes the truck worth less than factory...

Or, it could have $10k in expensive brand suspension and such, the owner traded it in for a gas saving car.

We don't know. We aren't the ones looking at it in person.

Case by case scenario, but that's just an asking price, so, make a lower offer if it has good components, installed properly, try and get the price down.

If it has shit brand suspension and poor installation, then run away from it.

I'd say nothing. If they know vehicle types, they'll know Subaru boxster engines always burn a little oil. I bought my daughter a new Crosstrek in 2014 (since sold) and a quart of oil every 2k was considered "normal". That's exactly why I sold the wife's 2011 Audi A4 Avant S-Line. Loved that car but it consumed more oil than the Subaru. Bought a new 2019 RAV4 Trail to replace it. Not near as exciting a vehicle to drive but it'll probably last longer.......

if it was a private party sale, i'd get documentation that it is normal, if it is, and tell the buyer and give them the documentation if normal.
a trade in is to professionals (that are already screwing you) so it is on them to look the car over. their price already statistically factors in such stuff.

Well I bought a 2023 TRD SPORT and it rips down the road. Love the truck after coming from a Subaru Forester and Outback in the last 15 years. I had a 1992 Toyota 4x4 extra cab PU back in the day and loved it until rust killed it. I'll post a pic of it tomorrow. Most money I spent in my life for a vehicle.

Nice truck! Good choice. Enjoy. I had a 1992 4X4 as well for 14 years. Got me hooked.

I doubt you could even finance it at that price. They would probably force your to put $15k down and buy gap insurance.

Looks like you found a much better deal.
