Trade-in cash incentives. You'll only find them listed in small print on the main brand website. If you are unaware, it gives the salesman a 3-5K buffer

I'm not sure what trick the dealership pulled because they applied a trade incentive to my deal (I only know this because the final offer came back the exact amount of the trade incentive higher than the original offer) however, Toyota was only offering the incentive on Tundras at the time. My guess is that they fudged with some information to be able to apply it to a Tacoma sale.

They had to have lost money on the trade, even with the incentive. 23K trade-in value for a car that blue booked at 17K in excellent condition. It was in a wreck with airbags deployed, so the car was probably realistically worth less than 12K.

So you originally said they messed up the price of your jeep by 5K and they gave you 39K for it . So are you saying they should have only gave you 34K when they are selling for 40K ?

No. KBB estimated my trade-in value at $40,000 when Jeeps were selling for that much. That means KBB was grossly overestimating; trade-in value should have been around $35,000.

Based on KBB, the dealer gave me $39,000, which ended giving them insufficient room for profit. But that was for them to figure out.
