The reason I bought mine was, I couldn't talk him into selling me his...now I'll have two. He's told me that if I sell one, it has to be mine.

I bought my truck for $24k back in 2010 and apparently it's worth $21k private party.

    They sure hold their value....

By reading all this comments.I think I got pretty good deal on my 05 DCSB TRD 173K miles equipped with XD wheels, premium stereo system, cb radio, lights bar and Relentless bumper for $12K.

KBB and NADA went up for turd gens too. I'm having a hard time though locating a clean 2nd gen at a reasonable price. Have bank preapproval, just have to off load the turd gen for a 2nd gen I like. Its a double edge sword with these trucks. You want the value to stay up for resale purposes but at the same time you want a deal.

That seems to be the case... I can't say too much personally yet since I've only put about 10k on mine. Its weird though, I feel like most modern trucks nowadays (*assuming they're properly maintained*) will last forever, yet its hard to think of another that has the stigma the Tacoma does for holding value. Don't get me wrong, I do love the Tacoma, its just really strange to me.

Don't disagree. I have seen Fords and Chevys with 400K miles.

However, people think EVERY Tacoma will go 500K miles, and every Chevy/ford will go 150K miles.

    Perception drives the market

I bought a used 2005 4x4 DCSB with 48,000 miles for $19K, had it 4 years and sold it with 70,000 miles for $18K. It sold 45 minutes after I listed it, which indicates I probably priced it too low.

Likely will follow same pattern as 1st and 2nd gens, unless they prove to just be total piles of shit which I doubt.

    Exactly.
As crazy as that is, it is true. Coming from a few GM trucks, I'd say 90% of the time someone's reaction to my Toyota was 'Oh that thing should last you forever.' That is both from car/truck enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts.

It's because Toyota controls their prices which in turn increases resale value. If Toyota took $12,000 off MSRP like we see Ford and Chevy do frequently do you think they would have as high resale value? the Answer is no, because Toyota holds their prices for new cars, used cars can sell reasonable priced.

If you take a $40,000 truck and knock $10,000 off the asking price for $30,000 your resale after a couple years is now $27,000 (give or take), close to half the original value. If you take that same truck but only take off $3000 bringing it to $38,000 then after a couple of years that truck resale is $35,000.. See the difference..$8,000

The used truck market depends a lot on the new truck market, at the end of the day, are you going to pay new car price for a used car if the dealer is giving you such a great deal?

I've seen a handful of people saying they wanna go back to 2nd gen. I know personally I like 2nds better than 3rds

Is that before or after the frame rots out from under the truck?

Keep in mind, some of us have been buying and driving trucks for a while. Perception comes from history and experience. I think the american trucks have gotten better (or so it seems) but Ford/MOPAR/General MOMO built junk for a lot of years. From day one when Toyota started selling the Hilux in the US it was obvious, these things were quality and would last. The contrast between a 1991 Toyota 4x4 and a 1991 Silverado is remarkable. They aren't the same truck obviously... so maybe look at the 1991 Chevy S-10. Holy cow what a heap those things were!

If I was going to get a new full-size right now, I'd go for Ford pretty likely. I wouldn't have said that even 7 or 8 years ago. Fiat/Chrysler and General Momo will never see another of my dollars. But the Taco is perfect for me right now. Glad I got a 2nd Gen, and glad I bought it new. Not only was resale high when I was shopping, I could hardly find an Access Cab, especially one equipped as I wanted. Especially since I don't live in a metro area, shopping the used market would have been a costly PITA. Glad to hear that the value has gone up, but I won't be selling mine unless I have some kind of life crisis and need to raise cash.

Tacoma and wrx (specially Sti Hawkeyes to current) are without a doubt the best resale valued vehicles on the market.

The jacked up value of the 3rd Gens is helping I think.
Good for me if I decide to sell if for an F150. Which might happen soon if I have one more mechanical problem with this thing.

Yeah I waited to see what the 3rd gens were like before I bought last October. Could not be happier with my 2015.

Even though I am a full year away from ordering a Tundra. I have been checking values on my Tacoma. Not sure where I am going to price the Baja. I may start a grand higher than the TRD OR value or maybe more. I think almost as important is the interior will be almost perfect and the exterior only has the usually little rock chips. Just put some ST Maxxs on it. Not sure if they will be a selling point around here or not. I am sure the Toyota dealer I buy from will be begging me to trade it in. I looked up a TRD OR 4X4 DCSB on Nada with my mileage and retail was about 85% of what I paid.
