I was just about to post an update. However, I am afraid it isn't the best of news. The parts were supposed to be done today based on the timeline the laser cutting shop had given me. I had been contacting them since last week and finally heard back. They haven't even started them nor have they started a steel order that I placed even further back. They told me one of their machines was down which was what they told me last time it started to take longer. I would have told him to cancel the orders and I would go to another place but at this point it probably won't save much time and these guys do a good job. So right now I am being told that they will have stuff early next week. Sorry for you guys that have to wait.

In order to brighten things up though. I have some parts that I have coming with these orders that include a highlift mounts and brackets for traction ramps (Maxtrax, Tred, smittybilt) specifically for these racks. I will be giving all the mounts I was able to fit on the sheet out to recent orders in a drawing so you guys can try them out on your racks.

If you get mounts for the smittybilt ramps let me know. I could use em! Awesome design on the bed rack, looking forward to seeing it done!

Do you have to have a pre-existing rack like a thule roof rack to mount one of these to the top of a camper shell? Or can you directly bolt them to the roof of a camper shell?

You can bolt directly to the camper shell. One previous customer did it using some custom shims/spacers he made to fit the curve of his topper.

I assume that is not required? Will the existing contours of the camper shell create any problems mounting if you don't. Just trying to think through the process.

    Yes
Yes, it is required. A lot of shells are convex in all directions or at least side to side so you can't bolt the rack straight to or flat to the roof of your camper IE: camper is round racks are flat. Some shells also slope back to front too.

That's my truck in the photo, making some sort of spacer is really the only way to do it without rails I think...? and even then depending on the shell if the roof is not flat the rails will need spacers too as they will follow the curve of the shell roof. That is what I ran into with my Snugtop. $20 worth of hardware, rubber washers, a pipe to cut the shims out of and a rattle can of color matched paint is all it took. If you look close in the photo you will notice the center spacer is much smaller than the front and rear because Snugtops curve in all directions and are crowned high in the middle.

If you want to mount it this way order a full width rack ( same width as cab rac ) and order it with the feet un drilled. This will allow you to drill your own holes exactly where you need them because you need to avoid the thicker part of the camper roof which you can't tighten a bolt and nut on very securely. You need to go wide to avoid that area in the roof of the shell, it is just laminated cardboard basically. Pre assemble the rack with a few cross bars and lay it on top of your shell then start measuring and just drill your own holes outside that thicker portion of the shell roof.

An added bonus of this spacer idea is that if you add a cabrac too you can cut your shims to perfectly level the two racks from cab to shell.

Back to the question about adding a light bar.

I'm looking at doing a 50" curved light bar and was wondering what the distance between the two sides are (ie. length of the crossbars)??

I'm wondering if it would be possible to bolt the light bar directly to the side rails. Possibly making a slimmer wind deflector so you can run the light bar and deflector together? (just thinking out loud here)

The change you made with the extra length in the front of the side rails might allow an install like sytfu510's but with the bar directly bolted to the side rails.

The width is 47". However, I did a custom side rail for Topher(He has pics of the rails in his build, tophers tenacious tacoma) and he was going to mount a 51 or 52" bar on his. I haven't seen pictures of how it turned out though. Anyhow, I can work around custom requests fairly easily. Just need exact dimensions of the light bar and such.

Zach, so if I do a Caprack on my Leer 100xq with factory Thule tracks, how many mounting points will there be on each side of the rack?

After a thousand miles with the RTT on the Thule, I am not thrilled with how high it sits and the potential for issues due to having only four mounting points.

Also, do you have any pics of the way your rack mounts to the Thule tracks?

There are 3 mounting tabs on each side of the rack. Each mounting tab has 2 slots that accomodate a bolt, and washer. the bolt fits into the captive nuts that slide into the thule/ yakima tracks. That gives you a total of 6 mounting points with 12 actual attachments. I f you want more, i can do so easily. I will get some pics of mine.
