Probably a horrible question with an obvious answer

I currently have 285/70/17 tires. The height/diameter is about perfect but I would like slightly skinnier width, maybe 1" less.

Apparently no such tire exists? I've tried various combos (like 275/75/17) but discount and tire rack say there are no tires in the size I've selected. I've tried a couple other combos, same thing. I think the limiting factor is the 17" rim. Am I stuck with my current width?

255/80R17 would be about the same OD and 30mm narrower(more than an inch)

Hmm, yeah that's probably about the closest... serious pizza cutters. I'll have to look at those someday in person. I'll probably end up with the same tire size as now (it's not that big a deal), but thought I'd see if anyone knew of a secret out there.

A cursory search on that size shows limited options (mud terrains) and a higher price, being a little oddball I guess. I've got another ~15,000 miles to mull things over, but yeah I suspect I'll stick with the current one.

I think 275/70r17 is the next “common” size. It is shorter than a 285. If you want the same height but narrower than 255/80 is the best choice.
