Purchased a 2014 Tacoma three days ago. Got a good look at it in the daylight two days ago and noticed some blotching/uneven marks in the base coat on the front left quarter panel. I was curious if anyone else has experienced this or has heard of others experiencing this. The problem is not as subtle in person as the pictures may suggest.

I have contacted the dealership and await the manager's call back tomorrow. This is killing me. Right front quarter panel is fine, as is the rest of the truck. I cannot believe that this is just the nature of dark, metallic paint.

This might be a hassle to argue with the dealership about. Once you drive it off the lot they don't cover cosmetics. If they are a reputable dealership they will own up to it, obviously you didn't do this yourself. And yes, it looks like it was from shipping.

Did the dealership have time to inspect it and what not? Or did you pick it up right after it arrived?

    Hey Silence9,

The truck was on the lot for at least a week before I purchased it and picked it up. I did look the truck over before driving it off the lot, but it was done inside a garage with lighting way different than direct sunlight. I only noticed it the next morning when I left to go to work.

It looks like it's under the clear-coat, not cool. Make sure they confirm the truck has never had body work. I worked at a dealer for many years. Lot damage is very common. They could have bumped the truck, and fixed. Not saying they sold it without telling you but you never know.

Tell them that you didn't notice it when you picked it up, and you obviously had nothing to do with it. They should fix it if they have any decency.

Saw that color in the dealer lot....so clean. Very nice look. That's not right though.

    It's left. Sorry.

Prolly an issue with whoever/whatever sprayed on the paint at the factory (assuming it wasn't resprayed between there and your dealership)... anyway they/it didn't lay on the metallic evenly resulting in that type of inconsistency. That's pretty piss poor in terms of quality control, best of luck. I can relate though. Even my truck, BRAND NEW, came with several long scratches on the roof that I didn't notice until after my purchase. I was able to lighten them up with some buffing, but still it bothers me. Add to that I'm only at 1200 miles and already have a noticeable rock chip dead center on my windshield. Can't keep anything nice any more.

    ^^^ This.

Call your salesman today and tell him you have rail dust on the fender and schedule an appointment. You'll want to get that off as soon as possible so it doesn't etch the paint. The dealer will know what this is and they have a special product to take that off.

That happened with my wife's car and it was an easy fix.

    Good Luck and nice truck!

That must be a Tacoma option that they don't list on the sticker.

Mine also came equipped with the roof scratches.

    Some stuff...
Only a few days old, the stealership should take care of you. I think by law you have like 3 or 4 days to bring the vehicle back and call the deal off, so you may want to research that and use it as ammunition if they give you grief.

Good luck and keep us posted!

That law is only applicable in some states. I know in NC, once you sign, it's yours.

Tacoma will be at the dealership this weekend. I sent photos and over the phone they seem to concede that it is not right. I will update this thread soon. Thanks all.

kinda curious how you guys think that is rail dust, doesn't rail dust look like lil specs of rust, that will come right out with claybar or compound?

btw, just bought a 2014 corolla about a month ago, it had 6 miles on it, and the rear bumper had been repainted, took it back to them, the next day, and they gave us another one

First of all, metallic paint is SUPER hard to spray properly... It can & will do some pretty funky stuff if sprayed incorrectly (tigerstipping, mottling, etc).

Second, "rail-dust" is pretty hard to get UNDERNEATH the white protective plastic sheets they stick to most of the vehicles painted surfaces...

Which happen to cover the fenders (and hood, and roof).

You can sorta see it on my truck here, the night it arrived @ the dealer... Fresh off the train.

x2 on the rail dust theory. Shouldn't you be able to feel it after a good wash? If the surface is smooth, I suspect poor painting of the base coat.

I just traded in a 2011 dc offroad in because they wanted to repaint 3 doors and hood because of bad paint. Kept my truck immaculate. Looks like the paint ran low on the assembly line. 2011 was white
