Key wouldn't turn on my old Tacoma, so embarked on replacing the ignition lock cylinder. Used a LockSmart LC63640 from Autozone.

Because I couldn't turn the key to ACC, I had to drill the pin out. That went smoothly and successfully removed the old cylinder.

Online info indicated I needed to turn the ignition switch to the ACC with needle nose pliers to align the new cylinder, also turned to ACC, into the housing. I turned the switch until the power came on a stopped.

I then inserted the new cylinder and it slid in and seated with no hang up. And I found that it the key wouldn't turn to the left!

Now I am in a pickle and wondering if anyone else has had problems with replacing the cylinder or can tell me what went wrong and how to deal with it now. It seems like that it wouldn't seat if it wasn't aligned correctly so I don't know what's going on.

The cylinder does turn right. In fact, I am able to start the engine. But it will not turn far enough left to shut it off.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

Push the key in (apply force towards the key hole with said key) before trying to turn it left?

Thanks for the suggestion. Think I had been pretty firm with it, but just to be sure tried again pushing as hard as I dare without risking damaging the key, but that does not work. I have also jiggled and worked the key, to no avail.

May be a dumb question, but are you in park? Steering wheel lock engaged?

Sorry, should have mentioned that it's a manual transmission. Since the key is turned to the right of acc the wheel lock is not engaged.

Could just be a faulty cylinder. Where'd you get it? Oem? I went through the same process for a buddy of mine on his landcruiser. He lost his key so I had to drill it out. Upon completion of installing the new aftermarket part we were unable to start the cruiser but could if we just used pliers to turn the ignition switch. The second ignition cylinder worked fine.

Thanks for the comment. It has crossed my mind the part is faulty; not OEM, LockSmart from AutoZone.

Did you drill the pin out of the replacement and return it for a new part? Or did you have to absorb the cost?

Question is how to know if it's a faulty part or could it have been inserted incorrectly? Can it seat fully in any position except the correct one?

Did not have to drill out replacement. Able to simply remove by pushing in the detent pin since the the cylinder was turned to ACC. Lock cylinder will only be fully seated with detent pin in place if the ignition is turned to ACC.

It seems fully seated and turns to the right so probably was at ACC when it went in, but now it won't turn back to ACC. I guess I will have to drill the pin out....and try another part.
