    Hey folks...

Got a check engine light with the "Trac off" light this afternoon. Put my code tracker on it and got a PO456. When I turn the truck off I hear a hissing in the engine compartment as though its releasing pressure on something. Truck has less than 2400 miles on it. Called the dealer - in on Monday.

Any idea? Fuel system leak, O2 sensor, gas cap?

    • A small leak in any of the EVAP hoses or fuel tank hoses
    • A small leak in the purge valve or vent valve
    • The EVAP Canister may be leaking

Would you prefer it happen later when you are out of warranty? I say work all the bugs out now or pay for them later.

    Tim & Surgie,

Agree and agreed. I would obviously prefer to have this happen now under warranty. Sad, no...upset...slightly. Its a new truck!

    Its all relative.

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
Still it should not have happen. Tacoma quality definetely suffered since 2009.
Its hard to defend things like that.

Okay...so here is what the dealer found out about the PO456 code...

Dropped the truck off at the dealer...said it would be about an hour before they knew anything...56 minutes later I was told they had no idea what the problem was...'something with the fuel system...need more time.' Great...I said I'd wait. About 30 minutes later the service guy says they need more time...'techs here have no idea and we need to contact Toyota.' So I get a lift back to work. About two hours later I get a call. "Truck is ready for pick up." I get to the dealer and was told it was the gas cap. Apparently it was loose and caused all the ODI-II code. They reset the code and sent me on my way.

So far I've not had any issues, but I find it interesting and puzzling that their techs didn't figure that out...or they simply got stumped, reset the code and 'get the customer out the door.'
