Programming a "dummy" key for a 2023 - no locksmith support yet

    Hello TacomaWorld!

Recently upgraded from my beloved 2015 MT SR5 to a TRD Pro. Missing the dash parking brake and the smaller key but the rest is a much appreciated upgrade.

That said I'm trying to work out the key issue. I understand the dealership can cut and program a Type A or Type B key for me. I'll go there if I have to but figure a locksmith would be cheaper. Having issues getting people to pick up the phone but the first guy I spoke with said they can't program the immobilizer for a 2023 key.

Browsing the forums I found some references to Tom's Key company but it appears they also don't support 2023 models yet. (https://tomskey.com/pages/toyota)

I'm curious if anyone has experience with when these codes get released to the general public. Obviously it's not a security issue as the models eventually get supported. Seems to either be a delay in releasing the information to suppliers or an intentional holding period to guarantee dealer business for a period of time.

    Any insights are appreciated.

Trying to get a new key cut and programmed. The manual transmission doesn't have a smart key but includes the lock/unlock/panic buttons on the key shaft. Makes it too large to fit in gym clothes when going for a run. I'd rather have the metallic only key. I don't need key less entry.

A locksmith can cut the key, but the immobilizer chip needs to be programmed to be recognized by the car computer. Locksmiths can normally do this but apparently the 2023 is too new for them. Tom's Key gives you a device which lets you do the programming yourself but they also don't have a 2023 listed.

So I'm curious if anyone has ever bought a new vehicle and knows how long it might take before 3rd party service vendors can do the programming independent of the dealership.

Are you looking to have a fully functional spare that can start the engine, or just one that'll allow you to unlock the doors?

Most of the hardware stores can make a copy out of a blank.

So you want a key without the buttons that can unlock and start the truck, or just a key to unlock the doors?

No vallet key, I don’t think the manual transmission came with that.

Needs to be fully functional. Vallet won’t unlock the lockbox. Going to leave the oversized keys back home and only take out for emergencies.

I doubt Toyota cares when the after market guys get any type of info on new vehicle parts or accessories. When i worked at a dealer and we asked after market suppliers about a product for a new model or model year they would sometimes say they were waiting for access to one of those vehicles to test fit that product.

I just went to a locksmith and got a key cut that will open the doors. When i go to the beach or something i just hide the key somewhere in the truck or lock in the glove box, and keep the key in my pocket. Or you could get the meso customs flip fob and have a fully functional key in a smaller profile.

*i also have a manual tacoma*

Not a bad idea for a fall back. Meso is only claiming to support up to a 2021 model year.

Interesting, I wonder if anything actually changes from year to year on the key programming or if it's just not officially listed as supported yet.

I meant the glovebox. The pictured key works but it's (way) bigger than I'd like. Old pickup had something more like this which was lovely. I never touched those stupid fobs in the 8 years I had it.

you dont program anything. you open up the key, cut out the transponder chip inside your key, and put your key and chip into the flip fob. watch the install video and youll see the process. I cant see why it wouldnt work with your '23. My '22 key has the "H" stamped on it, so it would probally work on my '22 and i dont see why it wouldnt work with a '23

Similar note, but has anyone seen these keyless entries? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMhGixhkAFo

Apparently it's only offered by dealers in some southern states which seems a bit weird to me. Can't find any info on if it has a battery or is wired in. Sounds like some users have issues with resetting it after windshield replacements.

Not sure why Toyota can't just have a keypad like Ford.

Ahh, that might be the trick. Still seems a little bulkier than I'd like but I'll have to look around for some other form factors.

might be the smallest key you can get with all the functionality you want. like i said you can always just get a key cut to unlock the doors and lock the keys in the truck. I like the option of just the door key for when im at the beach or fishing, and i dont have to worry about the key getting wet

Yes, my truck came with this installed by SE Toyota when I bought it. I haven’t really used it since I first set it up but it will come in handy when taking the mountain bike out to the trails or going windsurfing. It’s wired in and doesn’t use a battery.

It's not that the info is held back, it's that the locksmiths use different software than Toyota does. Toyota uses Techstream, and the latest version should be able to program the key. In fact, it should be able to before you even cut the key, since you don't need to turn the cylinder (at least, last I checked).
