Surprised an update for whatever scantool locksmiths OP is calling isn't there since the '23 actually came out in '22. Really doubt something changed in '23 model so if '22 is supported by scantool, it would probably work fine. I've programmed both a smartkey and H key using techstream and it's a 5 minute process provided you have a working spare. Both Rav 4 and Taco have 5 slots in memory for spares if I remember right and the H key worked right out of the gate. The most important thing is making sure to get blank with correct FCC ID.

Keep trying with different locksmiths OP. Hopefully there's a mobile one that will have what you need.

It probably only comes with the keyless entry trucks so they can have one full size normal key. I was only given two keys like yours as well.

I hunted all over this forum for information about a valet key that I would gladly pay a dealership for. NADA. I have the H key that comes with the 6MT but apparently there is no such thing as a valet key for H key owners. The automatic transmission folks can give the fob to the valet without the metal key insert and thereby keep the valet out of the glove box. If anyone knows of a valet key for H key owners, I would love to hear about it.

To have this as an option, your truck would need two different keys. One specific to the glovebox and tailgate (and possibly doors) and another for the ignition(which would have the keyless unlock). Like 60's-80's domestic cars. Then the valet could open your truck and drive it to the parking lot without having access to the glovebox. I suppose if the glovebox is the only concern, you could change the lock to a different key. Then have a metal blank cut for it (and a spare for it as well)

This is the same unit offered by southeast region Toyota dealers. Call these Houston based guys up in order to validate functionality on a 2023 for this $250 accessory..

Your scenario is one way to handle it, but both my 2006 Xterra and my 1998 BMW Z-3 have chipped valet keys that operate the ignition as well. I think it’s a matter of offering a chipped key that can turn one extra tumbler in the glove box cylinder, which would have that one extra tumbler over the ignition cylinder. It used to be done all of the time.

Yes it would have been nice to have that as an option, but I think there must be little demand for it. I personally haven't owned a vehicle with it as an option. At least there is a solution, not ideal but still.

Hello, I had the same desires and started this thread and figured it out:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/h’-key-without-remote-unlocking-for-3rd-gen-6mt.744026/

Basically the Tacoma can have 4 keys max programmed to start the car. I bought some extra keys 'dummy' and 'keyless entry' (smart means leave in your pocket).

Key (haha) is to find an 'automotive locksmith' and bring him your truck and the keys. I have 4 good working keys -two that came with the truck and two dummy keys without keyless entry that will start it. Just what I needed. I have a couple of others to open it only and not start it.

If you bring a couple extra keys the incremental cost isnt so much since they have it all set up.

Be grateful this is relatively cheap compared to other cars.

Thanks for all the info everyone. I'll have to keep looking around for a locksmith. Only ever got the one to pick up after calling four in town a few times. Local dealership said their key cutting machine is down too. Guess I'll have to be patient figuring out how to put everything together.

I haven't started digging through the forums yet but do you have any good starter guides on Techstream? I haven't ever messed with OBD but sounds like it could open up a lot of interesting settings.

I assume this is the official site for techstream https://techinfo.toyota.com. Is the only entry level kit the $1500 package with the connector and a 1 year subscription? Anyway to just buy the connector and get a 2 day subscription to start?

I got Techstream v14.2 off of @tonered 3 years ago (used to be in his profile and came with a keygen program - allegedly) and a cheap chinesium Toyota cable from Amazon. Hardest part was getting the drivers to work and be recognized with the cheap one. Mongoose is one of the official/approved cable manufacturers and Tactrix is well used thought the tuning community and is a bit cheaper.

Once you get the software and cable, programming is a piece of cake.

So if I understand this correctly, the maximum number of smart keys (fobs) that can be programmed to start and lock / unlock doors on a 3rd Gen Tacoma is four?

Yes (depending on the language). Smart Key means a key that will unlock a vehicle without touching any buttons-you are talking about dumb keys with basic keyless entry and dumb keys without keyless entry.

    https://www.caranddriver.com/research/a32799757/what-is-a-smart-key/

    https://www.makeuseof.com/what-is-keyless-entry-which-cars/

All smart keys are keyless entry and all keyless entry are not smart keys

I can't comment on Smart Key since I have a manual trans with dumb keys- two of which have basic keyless entry.

The Locksmith told me I can have 4 dumb keys programmed that the vehicle will recognize to start the car. I have two dumb keys with basic keyless (that came with the car) and two dumb keys without buttons (that I bought). All of these 4 keys will start the car.

I also bought 2 dumb keys with keyless entry that he programmed to lock/unlock-but he couldn't get them to start the car. He said it is different programming software that hits these areas. My guess is that the lock/unlock is simple rf that can take an unlimited number of transmitters, and the chip in the key that the computer recognizes is something different. I also have another dumb key that is cut but wont start the car. This is a good way to enter the vehicle without risk of theft.

This is a long answer YES.

Thank you. It appears that I have reached the limit. I have an automatic, and have four smart fobs.
