So yesterday, my buddy and I have installed a set of new wheels and tires. The set have brand new TPMS in a package.
I believe those new sensors need to be programmed into my truck.
How do I go about this - am I going to the dealer and do I need those new sensors' serial numbers, types and manufacturer?
I have never done that before - any advice is greatly appreciated!

just had it done in my vehicle, they have a little handheld computer that reads the TPMS codes then they plug the computer into your truck using obd2 port and makes the computer identify them...

Did you have this taken care of at the dealer? How much was it?

I took it to a local shop that installed my new tires, my new rims, my new TPMS, new lug nuts, new center caps, balanced, and programmed tpms was $200 bucks.
I'm assuming if it's just programming your Tpms should be between $20-40 bucks...

Related question... thinking of getting new wheels and keep the original wheels to occasionally run snow tires, which I'd move the factory TPMS to the new wheels. When running the original wheels, is the Tacoma going to be beeping at me that it doesn't see the sensors? Thanks...

hmmm...well i would think if you remove original rims....and put other rims with original tpms..tire sensor light would come on. when ever you go back to original rims ...but it doesnt beep....had light come on time to time....when it gets very cold in my area...but no beeping...
btw....if you have steel rims and are going to alloys....if you use original steel tpms. there 20° degrees..alloys are 40° degree...people say rotate steel 20° tpms to 180° degrees...flip them...but you run the risk if you ever get a flat of damaging or destroying 20° tpms.....
put theres plenty of people here that do that....i just bought new 40° for my news alloy rims....

The sensors were mounted in the wheels prior to the tires being mounted, correct? So everything is on the truck?

Did you buy the package from place like Tire Rack preassembled, and you just put them on the truck?

If no, whoever did your mount/balance should have taken care of the programming.

If yes, you'll need to find a shop with a programming tool, buy your own tool, or succumb to the dealer.

To add onto this, just for clarification, will the originals need to be reprogrammed entirely when put back on, or can you hit the TPMS button and it'll be able to find them? Silly question, but I just want to clarify.

A coworker of mine has two sets of tires for his Tundra, his truck is able to read the TPMS from whichever set of tires he has on his truck without any reprogramming being done.

That would be ideal if that's the case with the Tacoma as I'd buy additional sensors.

Good to know. Will likely be getting a second set for our 4Runner (and maybe one day for the taco). It'll be nice if we don't have to take them to the shop every time we swap them.

You need the sensor IDs. The wheel / sensor location is unimportant as the system figures that out. The Carista app or TechStream can program the new sensors. Be sure to write down the old sensor IDs before you overwrite them!

    Yep....lots
I bought the ATEQ quickset when I changed wheels. It reads your current TPMS sensors and from a computer you can enter the codes off of your new ones. Set one as summer, one as winter, and just plug it into the obd port and change them whenever you change the wheels. Works great.

Other than a dash light, there should be no beeping. I run a set of steel rims for winter without TPMS - the dash light comes on after about 30 minutes of driving.

If you sold your original wheels, with the TPMS in them, and want to get TPMS for a new set of wheels... What needs to be done? Anything different since you don't know the codes off of the original TPMS?

If you don't have your old sensors, it is no big deal. You just need to enter the new senor IDs:

Anyone know if you can you use VF Tuner to manipulate the TPMS codes stored in the ECU?

No. But, you can use the OVT Tactrix with TechStream to do that.
