Project “Dollar”

First post I’ll try to keep it brief. (Ish) A good friend of mine is moving out of country and sold me his 2016 tacoma DCLB SR5 4x4 in Silver. Playfully dubbed “Dollar” (Silver Dollar) it had a snugtop SS when I got it. Don’t know if that’s gonna stay. Not really a cap guy... Anyway, just wanted to share my build... No major questions at this time.

Threw on on of them eBay special $85 TRD pro grills. Super surprised that the thing looks quality.

Started with stock sr5 wheels and smoked tires so I upgraded today. 17x9 Pro Comp Vertigo’s wrapped in 265/70/17 falken wildpeak at3 in the lighter load rating so I don’t break my back. Had a little rub in the front on the air damn and inside front on the front Inner fender guard. Took care of it with a razor and relocated the screw location on the inner fender guard. Piece of cake.

Ive got rug rats (1&3 year olds) so I threw on some side steps/nerf bars. They’re Body Armor 4x4.

Blacked out the emblems with a cheap kit from Amazon and threw in a little “Merica” with the Tacoma tailgate insert.

Future plans include 6112 and 5100’s and an Icon progressive AAL. (Yes 5100’s) it’s a commuter/ mall crawl truck. Not really planning on off roading for now. No time really... bought an ecgs bushing here on the forum from another member and plan on throwing that in when I get to the lift. Just in case...

Only other mod I’m giving serious thought to is some Katzkins. With the kids, I don’t even want to think about what the seats are gonna look like in a year or 2. I’ll take a stab at doing it myself. Seen it on the old inter-web and doesn’t look to complicated.

Thank you! Agonizing decision let me tell ya. Methods, fuel vectors, pro comps. Tough decision for sure. But now that it’s done I feel really good about it. Thanks to @stolls as well for the kind reply to my inquiries about his/our wheels.

Dude, he’s so pumped!!! He’s kinda the go too for decision making. He chose these off a list of pictures. I chose the tires because he said “you should get mikes tires... They’re beefy!!!” (Mikes the neighbor down the street with a Mercedes sprinter van. He’s got 265/70/17 Wildpeaks too.) Really sold me to see them in person. KO2’s are legendary but since I was buying wheels I thought it would be smart not to break the bank. Maybe when these die I’ll spring for ko2’s...

 

I assume the boy on the third pic is your son! God Bless him! I have a 2yo son and they look so cute along the tacos!

 

i dont think youre missing much with ko2s. there are quite a bit of bad ass all terrain tires on the market now. plus they are so expensive, compared to other top tier tires.

 

I don’t know if anyone’s following this anymore but quick update. I just did the ecgs bushing on the rig in a preemptive strike approach. Perhaps I should have waited until doing the lift but I needed to take the new wheel off off to put on the hub centric rings so I figured what the hell. Should save me a few hours when the lift instal happens later on.

A few observations. The 75w LF transfer case oil from Toyota is crazy expensive but I drank the coolaid. $70 per 1 liter can... so so stupid...

I bought the ecgs bushing and tool from another member for $110... plus the oil and then I needed a new torque wrench. So I really got got on this job that I’m not even sure I needed to do... but fuck it it’s done now and at least I won’t be waiting for something to go wrong. I figure if I lift it the only thing that could cause a problem is having to drop the diff or driveshaft bearing. Heck of a lot easier that the ecgs bearing so the hardest part is done. Just piece of mind.

waiting fir some good used or a good sail on the bilstein 6112’s. I swiped an icon progressive add a leaf with some 5100 shocks fir the back so I’m set out back.

Quick update for anyone following. I found a set of 5100’s front and rear with eibach coils for a good price so I abandoned my dreams of 6112’s. Added a 1/4” headstrong taco lean spacer and threw it on today. I also found a stock leaf pack with icon progressive add a leaf already installed for cheaper than new with low miles so I grabbed that up and threw it on too. The result is 2” in front and 1.5” in the back. Sits about a half inch higher in the back so I’m pretty happy. Drives pretty much the same. Bit stuffed but in a good way. Maybe tighter is a better word. Less jarring but absorbs better with less back to front up and down movement. Happy so far. Only other thing I have planned is a DIY katzkin black leather seat install. Maybe around Christmas time ;-) I like the zest design but I have kids and it’s already stained to hell. Hope everyone’s weekend was productive!

 

Just had OVtune 2.0 performance and the TSB installed on my truck today! Pretty happy so far with the change. Defiantly feels much much better! Before I felt like I was pushing a garbage truck around with a lawn mower engine... now it just feels like a truck. Not amazing... but so so much better. It drives reasonable now.

Just spent the evenings of this week installing katzkin leather seats and seat heaters. I got the skins from touch up automotive out of Arkansas... they sell on eBay and Amazon but I went through their website because they offered free shipping, cheaper price, and no tax. I bought a set of hog ring pliers too from them. It the door for $560!!! Solid. Install was pretty strait forward. Easy enough, just tedious. I decided to add seat warmers as an after thought. Ordered a universal Toyota set off eBay for $100. The switches look factory and fit perfectly in the blanks next to the charger on the console. Overall, extremely happy. No more milk stains!!!!! I think I’m done nodding at this point. For now lol.
