    Hello all!

I picked up a set of DIY retrofit headlights off FB marketplace for free, but I'm not sure what I've got. I know there aren't any bulbs, so I'll need to get those. Beyond that, I have no idea what I need to get these guys up and running, so any help would be appreciated. I'd love some bulb recommendations as well!

The guy who did the retrofit said that he was trying to get Morimoto bulbs to work, but they wouldn't fit. Not sure what that means as far as new bulbs goes.

    Thanks in advance!

    Edit: forgot the pictures:anonymous:

i've been away from retrofitting for a number of years, so i might be a little rusty..

it looks to me like those are going to be D2S hid bulbs, which will require a wiring harness, and ballast to work correctly.

due to the current trends, i suspect the last owner might have been trying to fit led morimoto bulbs in there, which led has a different form factor, and other issues. hid is going to be better in just about every way.

the plug coming off below the bulb opening is going to be to enable the high beam output. an appropriate wiring harness will take care of this.

i would suggest a harness like this

    you'll need bulbs like this

and a a pair of ballasts

Thank you so much! I went to autozone last night and the manager and I tried every option of LED bulb, but none fit quite right. The HB4 bulb went in ok, but it didn't seem to be the right one. I ordered a pair on Amazon, they arrived today but I'm not home to check them. I'll look into the HIDs. Is there anything I need to know about them/the install to not burn my truck to the ground?

Pretty sure those are FX-R 3.0 D2S projectors. Ive installed these before and they have a great cut off and even sweeter high beam. Down side is that they arent a noob friendly install and the good part is you dont have to worry about that unless rotational aim is horrible.

They take D2S bulbs and ballasts. The red wires are for your high beam solenoid.

I recommend 4300k D2S bulbs with 35w ballasts. Dont forget the harness which can be purchased from theretrofitsource

what identifying marks make them fx-r's?

i believe i have a set on my parts shelf i could compare to, but all i can really make out in the picture is the bulb opening.

i had originally thought that it was an md2s, or mh1 projector(ruled out by the bulb opening), as the apollo shroud was more commonly used with those for quick retro's lots of times.

these projector retrofits were popular about 8-9 years ago.

these are the rear of the FXR 3.0s

What makes you say 4300K? Just curious, I'm looking on Diode Dynamics website and they offer 4300, 5000, 6000, and 8000. I was thinking maybe the 5000K for a whiter look. I know the whole amber/dust thing as all my offroad lights are amber, but is there a benefit to the lower color temp on road? Thanks for the id of tthe projectors!

No problem! you got a sweet setup now!

i personally like oem 4300k temp range. some can argue this range of color is much better on the eyes and for vision in inclement weather.
