Right on, I appreciate the detailed response. I think I see what you're saying.

So, if the 888 coil and the 887 coil are each preloaded at the same shock perch, it sounds like the 888 coil would extend the length of the shock by some amount (5mm?) relative to the shock mounted to the 887 coil. But would the extended shock length of the preloaded 888 coil assembly lift the truck a little higher relative to the preloaded 887 coil assembly? Seems like it would due to the extended length of the shock, no?

Also, this is a purely hypothetical scenario. The 888 and 887 coils are just convenient examples.

So from my understanding, to clarify, and TLDR this, spring rate is spring rate no matter the length (obviously - as this is due to distance of compression and the constant k, which is due to the metal being used and it’s properties (k=F/delta x).

length of the spring does NOT change the preload AND it does NOT change travel. What does the Spring length change though?

Sorry for reviving a 4 years old thread.
Length of spring DO affect preload if you want to maintain the same ride height. The shorter spring will require the spring mounting perch to be set higher.
That said, you only need longer spring if the shorter spring is binding, otherwise there is no reason to change to longer spring. It will only add unnecessary weight.
