I know this is "old tech" by today's standards, but hoping someone has an idea of what may be going on. So a few weeks ago my PS3 (160 GB Slim bought new in 2011) started hanging up about an hour into playing any game. It would normally freeze between load screens and a 1-2 second soundbyte would loop over and over again. I could actually hit the PS button and get back to the main menu, but when I would try to restart the game it would give various disc read errors. I put a new SSD and loaded only the most updated software (I.e. no game saves, photos, or videos). This didn't help. Thinking it might be dirty and overheating, took it apart , cleaned the cooling system (fan still works perfectly and it has always been in a very open space without blockage) and Blu-ray & DVD lenses. Still didn't help. The problem progressively got worse and now can't play more than 10 minutes without locking up. The weird thing about all of it is that it can play any Blu-ray movie all day without any issues, but games make it lock up. Does this have to do with the motherboard or is there another component I should check? Thanks!!

Is it locking up during network gameplay or campaign style gameplay? My PS4 has been dog sh*t on the network lately and i think it's the actual PSN network having issues.

I have one for sale if you happen to buy another. Let me know if you're interested. I'd trade for some truck parts too if you have anything.

I would say take it to a specialist. Or you can buy a heat gun and heat up the mother board slightly then let it cool. The solder may have to be re-flowed.

Sounds like the laser is failing. Does it play regular DVD's?

When that goes out disc playback takes a hit. Typically bluray's will have issues as well but things will act funny when it's going out. You'll need to find the correct one for your PS3. They are not hard to install, I've done a handful of them already.

Example (Make sure you order the right one if you do this)

    https://www.amazon.com/KES-400AAA-Laser-Replacement-Repair-Playstation-3/dp/B002MRKXZQ

If that isn't the case you might need to re-flow the board due to over heating issues. Typically they just die if over heating and throw out beep codes with red lights.

I might be interested in the PS3 if the OP doesn't need/want it. My cabin PS3 took a shit and I need a new one.

Alright, I got it about 2 years ago and it's been played like 10-15 times. Just don't have time for it.
It's the 320 GB newer slim version. I'd like to sell it as a bundle with the games and controllers I had just to get rid of everything. Shoot me a pm if our interested.

Thanks everyone!! There are no ISP's in my area except for satellite and 4G, so no PSN access.

@Aw9d, thanks, this is kind of what I was thinking too. It was just confusing because it plays Blu-ray movies just fine, but can't read game disks after 10-20 minutes of play. I may try replacing the BD laser, and if that doesn't work, just pull the trigger on a PS4. Thanks!!!

Edit: Thanks for the offer @ctsnow13 but if the fix doesn't work I think I might just upgrade.
