That's absolutely devastating to read and I can't imagine the emotional damage for all parties involved. Unfortunately, can't the good Samaritan be civilly sued for negligence? It goes to say, " No good deeds go unpunished "

You can buy weighted "blankets" at Harbor Freight for around $16 each designed for the purpose. I have a couple in my recovery bag with my kinetic rope, straps, soft shackles, and myriad of other shit designed for the task.

I'm gonna bet that person is experiencing his own personal hell and punishment, moreover than any court could dole out.

In our wonderfully litigious society, I'd bet he will experience the wrath of a vindictive attorney at some point in his near future.

While I don't know the answer, I believe there were no strangers in this case, and the guy pulling was actually a friend of the family.

Doubt it. I'm not enough of an armchair lawyer to know whether good Sam laws cover this (doubt that too).

However, is easy to argue that the victim participated in the recovery and therefore accepted liability, even if implicit.

I truly hope the berived find peace in their own way, wasting money on an ambulance chaser would not be helpful for them.

I would of pulled him out backwards. Even with the 4020 John Deere.

Condolences to Ryan's family & friends.

It was the leverage off the drop and not the straight pull that did it. The one you link is probably solid steel bar instead of tube.

There was a serious amount of leverage on that drop nitch

    Very sad indeed.

Cheap gear is often very expensive in the end and not always in money.

Yep, look at the height of the drop hitch in relation to the width of the seat!

Several things could've been done differently to reduce the risk, including just opening the hood of the Ford.

TW has a towing bible, does it have one for best recovery practices (and what not to do)?

Sadly, seeing the amount leverage on the drop hitch should have been a huge red flag. Soft shackles are nice but if you lever the whole damn hitch off, well it won’t make much difference than what happened here.

On ships if you need to cut a high tension line or cable its common practice to secure a secondary line around either end of your cut, or onto any attached gear that may go flying once the tension is released. I’ve seen this with tree cutting too, put a line on the branch and tie it to the tree so when it goes snap it doesn’t just crash to the ground.

I’m sure you’ve heard the line “a chain is only as strong as it’s weakest link?” And with that being said, if the shackle has a rating on it and the shank does not then it’s to be considered rated at zero. This goes for any and all rigging equipment.

I'm very old school in thinking that a high speed snatch is almost always the wrong tool for the job.

... But that's just my stupid opinion. :cookiemonster:

This was worth a read: Bottom line is the forces involved here are really really big with such a big truck stuck so deep, and that takes a lot of careful consideration to extract safely. That drop hitch makes me sad though, should have been a huge red flag

Should have been and it's truly sad that this occurred. I'm not an engineer but the fulcrum force of using an 8" drop hitch with 2" square tube would be about 4:1. Assuming that the 18K pounds of force was required to remove that rig is accurate that would place close to 64K force on that drop arm. If there are any engineers that read this please correct my math here.
