Oh, interesting! Does it reduce the life of the steering rack, then?

Why wouldn’t you want to go with the JD Fab Howe TC kit?

OP’s build thread is budget SAS, not spare no expense. I’m guessing this was less $$$ than the $1,800 JD kit. Although that one is flashy and I’m sure works well

Their kit is solid. But almost 2k.

i can create something almost identical for around 700 bucks.

The JD kit was my original choice

You can’t create anything close for that price so I wouldn’t go around saying that. The TC pump is $450 alone, then you need a pulley, machine work for the pump shims, cooler, resi and all the lines and fitting. The parts alone are almost double the cost of your $700 number. Then you still don’t have mounting brackets for anything, hardware, specific belt or the custom rack fittings needed.

So for $700 you could maybe install a low grade, shitty TC pump with out all the correct parts and mounting brackets.

The machine work is a bit of time but I have access to the equipment needed to get that done.

Obviously my labor isn’t included in that amount.

I’ve Priced The PSC, their reservoir, and cooler and it’s not to bad.
I’m not at all trying to bash anyone and I’m certainly not advertising anything but if i can build it and see what happens I might just try it.

JD fab makes killer stuff and I think i even saw your truck in there when I toured their shop a bit ago.

I may end up ordering their Kit anyways as my steering is in dire need of an upgrade, but I’m Definitely going to end up trying the above as well

We have just had really bad results with PSC stuff. I’d way rather run a stock pump then a PSC pump that leaves you stranded.

The JD kit is designed and built around the Tacoma and the Tacoma rack so there is no guess work involved. It also includes detailed instructions and the exact parts you need which will save you tons of time trying to figure things out

    Hmm good to know.

I ran PSC on my Cherokee and never had a problem, however that is Definitely a different system than would be used in this application.

Also wanted to ask you lol, did you upgrade the trans cooler on your taco with the bigger tires and all?

    I’m contemplating a supercharger.

My PSC steering box in the Jeep leaks like a sieve. It's strange because their full hydro stuff with GM based pumps I haven't seen many issues with. It's their other stuff that's just meh.

Man this post got revived in the past few weeks. This whole setup is still going strong on my rig, bigger reservoir and a finned cooler keeps the temps nice and low, even on all day trail rides. No issues with the pump yet, the factory pulley I put on there seems to give me all the pressure and gpm I need for the 8" ram.

    Great project OP.

For DIYers and the budget mined, have you tried the pump from a 4.0L 2007+ Tundra? The Tundra has a massive steering rack which requires a large volume of oil, might work well?

Also check out the steering reservoir from a Hino 268 Series truck. Looks like a fat version of the stocker, holds a liter of fluid, and has a built in filter w/ bypass valve.

The shop I work for sells all PSC kits Jeep/Ram when 35"+ are used offroad. Not many issues as for craftmanship or leaks.

I used a cheap inline filter for PS fluid.
I would just get a reservoir with a filter built in if I were you.
