So much of my career I have been in the "Big Data", "Metadata", "Predictive Analytics" world. Companies are collecting massive amounts of data on your devices today. Anything that is wired and has the ability to get to the internet is going to report something about your: device, items in that device, your habits, and what ever it can. Companies for the most part use this information to make themselves 'better'. In the case of our trucks it seems that Toyota is sending information to the dealers to make sure you service the truck. This is preventative for warranties and also to gather more $$ from you. Also to give you better service. They also can use this data to do analytics on the parts in your truck as they fail. One of the use cases is that they can sell this data to other parts/auto manufacturers.

A famous case is the Nest thermostat. We are all familiar with the Nest. The great little thermostat invented by the same guy that helped invent the iPod. Well Nest found out that they could make a few $$s of the data that they had about your home back to the utilities and HVAC manufacturers. In fact Next now makes more revenue off of your data than they do off of the devices themselves!!!

Toyota wants to help you, but they really are looking after themselves at the end of the day. And, your truck is spying on you of sorts. :alien:

Every time you go in for service they log your current miles and can roughly estimate your driving habits based on that. I sell Mercedes Benz and that is how we do it. My TRD OR flexes among 100k AMGs on the lot!

You were the owner until you apply for a title...a title states your the registered owner of a motor vehicle. Until certificate of title is defined in the vehicle code your just a tenant with equity rights to the property and all the liability that comes with it.

Huh. Now I'm kinda pissed off that I'm this predictable. I need to start throwing off some algorithms. Tomorrow I'm driving to Fairbanks, I'll use my debit card for a single purchase of a truckers hat and a road flare during the trip, meanwhile I'm going to buy a single shoe on Amazon, women's size 5, and have it shipped to Holiday inn Orlando, and I'm going to start searching for Scandinavian stand up comedy on Netflix. That's a start.

As much as you think you can throw off the system, you can't. You would be shocked how surprising predictable people are in all their actions. In reality here what could happen in your scenario:

The places that you visit will keep track of the last four of your credit car number and your name. That is all they can keep by law. That combo becomes your "ID" they then will cross reference what you buy and perhaps see where else your name pops up or compare it to your past purchases. :D

When you buy that shoe on Amazon they will call up the FBI then cross reference all Phych wards near your home. Then make you a reservation while creating a "he's nuts" profile with your Doctor. Netflix will start advertising "One Flew Over the Coocoo's Nest" and other like minded movies to make sure they get as much as money as possible from you before you're sent off to the looney bin.

This is interesting. Just went to the site to read what it states. There is a boatload of information they can collect including "voice recordings". Including Alexa. This is why I do not have Alexa, Google Dot or Apple devices in my home. They are designed to listen.

What is most concerning is that this states we had an option to opt out of this service at time of purchase. I do not remember having the option at the time of purchase!

Here is a copy and past of some of the site:
    ________________________________________

When you purchased or leased your Vehicle, you had the opportunity to opt-in to receive Connected Vehicle Services such as navigation assistance, emergency services, remote engine start, maintenance alerts and more.

We provide you with these services by collecting and using your personal information and vehicle location, health, and driving data.

    • Safety Connect. Your Vehicle’s Safety Connect feature provides roadside and emergency assistance, automatic collision notifications, and stolen vehicle assistance. Safety Connect uses your Location Data (your Vehicle’s latitude and longitude) to determine where your Vehicle needs assistance, your Personal Information (such as your name, address, phone number, email address, etc.) to verify your account, and your Voice Recordings (when you call our response center) for quality assurance.
    • Service Connect. We use your Vehicle Health Data (such as odometer readings, fuel level, oil life, and diagnostic trouble codes) for the Service Connect application, which sends you vehicle health reports and alerts you of needed maintenance.
    • Remote Features. Certain Remote Features such as vehicle finder, remote door lock and unlock, guest driver monitor, and vehicle alerts use your Location Data to find your Vehicle, Vehicle Health Data to provide status updates, and Multimedia Screen Data (i.e., data regarding how you interact with screens in your Vehicle) for quality confirmation.
    • Destination Assist. Your Vehicle’s Destination Assist feature allows you to choose a place of interest, a location on the map, one of your favorites, a destination from your history, or enter an address or coordinate. We use your Location Data and your Personal Information (to verify your account) to offer these features.
    • Use-Based Insurance. You may choose to opt-in for use-based insurance products and services. If you opt-in, your Driving Behavior Data (such as data on your Vehicle’s acceleration, speed, braking and steering) and Location Datawill be used to deliver services to you, and for quality assurance, analysis, research and product development.
    • App Suite. When you use our App Suite for traffic, fuel, weather or other apps, we may need to verify your subscription with your Personal Information, and we will use Multimedia Screen Data and Voice Recordings to improve our responses and voice recognition.
    • Toyota + Alexa. No personal, usage or driving data will be collected by Toyota via your use of Toyota + Alexa app. Any data collection by Amazon shall be governed by Amazon’s privacy policy and terms of service.
