So you're saying the state owns my truck? That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard....and it's incorrect.

#1 - the state doesn't want to own 1,469,246 vehicles, 75% of which are junk. (fake count and stats)
#2 - If that WAS true, which it's not, I would immediately stop paying to insure THEIR vehicle, and you should too.
#3 - It's parked at my house. I drive it. I have the only keys to it. I'm not giving it to them regardless of what they (or you) THINK they own.

Therefore.............my truck....sorry, your theory just doesn't hold water, legally.

Okay...but warrantless searchers are legal on motor vehicles and the police can tow a vehicle without due process of law why because you don’t own it. This wouldn’t be an issue if the definition of certificate of title was defined in the vehicle code but it’s not because nobody would buy a vehicle they can’t own.

I'm not going down this rabbit hole with you, but I'll end with this. Warrentless searches are certainly NOT legal on motor vehicles. If they have no probable cause ("PC" moving forward), and they ask the standard "you don't mind if I look through your car do you? I mean there's nothing to hide, right?" and you say "No you can't, I definitely DO mind"....they can't legally search your car. The side of the road isn't the place to argue that, so they can do what they want at that moment. But anything produced from an illegal search, which that would be, won't be allowed into evidence if your lawyer has half a brain. And the idea that somehow got started and passed on in my younger days...the idea that simply by saying "No I do not consent to you searching my car" gave them PC to search your car, is ridiculous. So if you say yes, then they can search it with your consent....and if you say no, then they can search it because "that's suspicious" (which is not illegal, BTW) or whatever other term they wanted to use......If that was enough to give PC, then why even ask...just search it like a Nazi.

To summarize, if you are asked permission to search your car....YOUR car :) ....and you say "no" (which you should...always), and they don't have probable cause to search it without your consent, then they can't search it LEGALLY. Yes, the 8 people with guns can pretty much do what they want, but they can't do it legally.

But again, think what you want...what do I care.

One stupid argument at a time please :)

Geez you Americans have ownership issues. We're all just dust in the wind, and that includes our trucks and houses.

While I agree that in the end it doesn't matter, there's really no issue with ownership. If you buy something from someone who has the right to sell it, it's yours.

    Case closed.

Good way to throw off creepy dealer service reminders is to do your own maintenance and not reset the reminder light.:fistbump:

I wonder about this too. The owners manua excerpts that have been posted mention "data transmission", but how is that accomplished? A direct cellular connection (like GM's OnStar), or does it rely on your smartphone connection to Entune via Bluetooth?

This would most likely require a Sim card that could be soldered on. The other scenario that others have pointed out is possibly using the bluetooth connection on your phone (maybe via the app). Either scenario is seems very possible.

Google Fi gives out free data only sim cards and charges less $0.01/MB so this would cost Toyota almost nothing in bulk.

Maybe we should start a poll with people using the entune app and people who just have Bluetooth enabled to find a pattern.

TLDR soapbox rant coming, please feel free to ignore :D:

The Bluetooth thing is not bothersome as it is within my control. A direct cellular connection is going overboard.

I don't mind the whole data collection thing as long as the consumer has a choice of when and where it is collected, but it's when the market forces it on consumers by eliminating alternatives, that's when it bothers me. VZW is not going to support dumb phones anymore, and other carriers are following suit. Vehicles are coming connected from the factory, and the only choice you have is whether or not you pay for a service using that connection. The hardware is still there with no way to turn it off short of removing the hardware. I imagine that manufacturers are still able to access data through it. We're already paving the way to have every facet of our homes connected too, just look at all of the IOT devices out there. Right now there's a choice to not buy one of those devices, but as with everything else it seems, the market will squeeze those alternatives out too. I feel like the whole 5G movement plays into the scenario too. That last funnel point (i.e. turning off your router) will eventually be eliminated.

I am the last person to wear a tinfoil hat, truly. I work for state government, the Feds have my DNA and know everything about me due to my job. That doesn't bother me. But private companies collecting data and not explaining how it's used (or using nebulous terms) is irking to me. Especially since they already made a profit on the product I bought, then continue to profit through automated data collection and sales.

BTW, I have a smartphone, which I have the choice to leave at home, and often do. I do not have internet at home other than my smartphone, mainly because the only other choice in my rural area is satellite, which I've read is not worth the money.

I stumbled upon this thread and I just wanted to chime in. I'm new to this forum, but I found the topic really interesting. I've heard of psychic dealers before, and while it might seem a bit strange to some, I think it's important to keep an open mind. Anyway, just wanted to share my thoughts.
