PT948-35160 Bed Lighting Kit Install Instruction (2017 Model Year)

I’ve been able to find install instructions for 2015 and older OEM bed lights here on TW, as well as elsewhere on the interwebs. However, the kit I recently bought did not include instructions (or mounting templates), and had a note stating I needed to get them printed from a dealer.

Seems like the kit has been updated a bit. There’s now grommets included behind each light and OEM style connectors already in place where they need to be. Yes, I can certainly figure it out, and successfully install them without the instructions. However, it would be nice to see what’s actually changed from an install perspective.

From 2015 and below to 2016 and above, I noticed the following changes:
- Mounting hole sizes increased from 7/64 to 1/8 for 2016+
- 1-1/8” hole saw required for the wire lights and grommets in the 2016+
- Detailed locations of wire tires for the 2016+
- IE1 pin-out details for both cab configurations for 2016+

This 2017 model bed lights kit has been vastly improved, when compared to the kits used in videos available on YouTube. A pre-wired in-line fuse is supplied in the feeder cable, and cable lengths are almost perfect. I had about a foot of extra cable, that was really easy to deal with and didn’t require cutting out excess and splicing.

Grommets are supplied behind each light (1-1/8” hole required) as well as for the body access near the drivers seat, and they do not need to be removed during installation.

The first thing I noticed, was that the instructions explicitly call out an access hole that’s not mentioned in any of the videos I could find. Using the specified hole, made it possible to not have to remove the seatbelt trim behind the drivers seat. The provided instructions also call for different installation procedures, which made running the primary supply cable a little easier (getting over the fuel tank still sucks bad). You basically start at the specified hole, feed your termination end up under the carpet, and seat the grommet that’s on the cable.

Going through the cab routing and termination sequence is fairly easy. Yes, against my better judgement I used the supplied vampire clip for +12v, just because of where the connection is and access to clip in the future. I gobbed some e-grade silicone in the vampire clip for my own piece of mind. For the ground, I did install a fork terminator, and installed that under the bolt for the near by ground cluster.

Routing the cable from under the truck is easy...except for going over the fuel tank. Spent almost 90 mins on that part alone.

The light install is clean, and very functional. Works in conjunction with the high-mount cab light, including the off/door/on switch on the dash.

I installed this same kit on my truck. Easy install, you are right about fishing the wiring harness over the fuel tank. That took me hours to get it just the way I wanted it.

Got it.
That was with my tonneau cover, so none of the third brake lighting got into the bed.

 

Anyone know if this kit works for 2nd gens? Any pics of the lights used? Where is the switch located?

Went out to take a night pic of mine, but it didn’t look as good as @bonifacio ‘s, so I settled for pics of the installed lights themselves.

I had the salesman order it for me as part of the deal when I bought the truck. Also had him order a bed mat at the same time.

 

Prices? Just curious what deal pricing is.

Realize this is a old thread but wanted to add since I finally decided to add bed lights for my 2018.

PT948-35160 = has rubber grommets preinstalled on the wire harness for the cab floor and where lights attach onto the bed. Requires drilling a larger 1 1/8" in hole in bed to mount.

Part #'s: 00016-34187; 00016-35087 These do have grommets on the harness. Drill hole size in bed is much smaller (just enough to pass wire). Where wire passes into to cab floor the instructions say "cut a slit in the existing grommet and seal with silicone" You can see that here for comparison against PDF instructions shared above by OP. http://toyotaparts.sparkstoyota.com/install/00016-35087inst.pdf

One additional difference: all use a T taps to grab power from driver foot well but the type of T tap style varies (two wire pass through vs single wire w/ spade plug in)
