I have a 2008 Tacoma. Truck will trun over but not start after over heating. I have done a compression test, number are front to back 60,10,10 and 62. I have also a done a leakage test numbers were 70% and lower.
My question is should I tear down or just replace the motor? I'm just looking for thoughts. Truck belongs to my mother in law I know replacement of the enqould be the quickest repair. Thanks in advance.

Oh, when I say the truck over heated, it was hot hot enough to blow the radiator cap off.

Those are dismal compression test numbers. I’d suspect the head is warped if I had to throw darts at it.

You might pull the head and see just how bad it is, but it’ll be faster to find another motor.

    Yeah.
If it has good bones otherwise, I'd swap it out with a used or rebuilt motor, whatever you can find.

Pull the head and see if the cylinders are still smooth. If the cylinders are not scratched and there is no evidence of seizure (metal/aluminum deposits on cylinder walls) then replace the head. Your local machine shop can tell you if your old one can be saved. That may get you going till you can get an engine core and rebuild it.

I would tear it down and evaluate it and have the head checked by a competent shop. Check the cylinder walls etc. you know for sure it has a blown head gasket. Who knows you might get lucky :pccoffee:

As a tech I wouldn’t bother, it’s cooked, aluminum has a memory and even if it got machined it would still warp again.

Id go straight to a used engine quote.

As a retired Mechanic and former Maintenance Director. If you are not going the route I suggested above, I would not waste my time with a used Engine. I would purchase a Reman engine with a Warranty.

We don’t have reman Toyota engines here. A short block with heads would be probably 13k

You might get lucky and find one at a junk yard that came from a truck that had been hit in the rear but you will also need the ECM

With Toyota v6 we’ve had lots of luck. Haven’t had a bad engine yet from our wrecker.

The 4 bangers are a crap shoot and we don’t do used anymore. Oil consumption from ring lands is super common.
